if you decided to rechamber a 308 can you go to the 284 win or 284 wildcat without a whole lot of mods? would you need to open up the boltface for the 3 thou diff?? being that the 284 win is the same capacity as the 30-06 (minus 2 grains) i think it is a keen platform for wildcats. imagine 30-06, 338-06, 35 whelen, 375 whelen, 400 whelen power out of an ol' 308 but in a more efficient fatter case. heck you could go to 416, 423 and even 430 (44 mag and marlin 444 bullets) if yer hearts desire was there... am i crazy? 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. Boom, The .284 is the basis of the most interesting cartridge you can have on the short action... 6.5/284. Ah sorry to disappoint your +40 caliber bearing... Really though the boltface is the same as the .308 and the real issue become the overall length of loaded rounds. It is an excellent case. I shoot a 6/284 and a 6.5/284 both on former .308's. The feeding of the slightly fatter case is also an issue for the feed rails. Member NRA, SCI- Life #358 28+ years now! Here is the 30-284 as chambered (and loaded) by a local smith. Left: 30-06 (M2 ball), Right: 30-284. I believe this is simply the 284 necked to 30 without any other changes. He uses a 165gr Hornady Interbond, claims 3000+ fps using one of the Reloader powders. He claims considerable hunting success with this on western deer, and has the pictures and heads to prove it. But his rifle(s) are custom barreled on long - '06 length - actions, so no conversion from 308 is involved. It's doubtful he alters the bolt face, but that would have to be confirmed. Also see a Rifleshooter Mag. article by M.L. McPherson, "Wildcatting the .284 Winchester" for alternatives and comments about conversions. Good luck, and good shooting. Jim

I had a .30/.284 which was a Winchester Model 88 in .308 Winchester with no changes other than to run in the .284 reamer. It was VERY ACCURATE...like 1/2" groups with 180 gr. Norma bullets and 57.5 grs. H-4831! But, the downside was, that was with the Norma RN bullets. With spitzer bullets, the rounds were too long for the magazine. So basically, it was a short range, very accurate '06-clone on a short lever action. Here's another thought for you...as you likely know, the 7.5 Swiss case is almost identical to the .284 case opened to .30, except the rim of the Suisse round is not rebated. So, if you wanted to, you could also open the bolt face slightly for the 7.5 Swiss case, and shoot that round instead. In a Mauser or other action with a generous dimensioned extractor that would likely pull .284 brass too, then you could maybe use both factory 7.5 Swiss ammo AND handloaded .30/.284 ammo. I am about to try that in a .308 Musgrave RSA "Target Model" action (that action has a Mauser-type bolt and extractor) to see if it will really work. I have a ForGreen 7.5 Swiss reamer, so why not....? It ahould work fine, as I am already shooting both factory 7.5 Swiss ammo and my .30/.284 handloads from the Model 88, in my K-31 Swiss rifle. My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.
