I have been reading from time to time about the difficulty of duplicating the model 98 action economically. I'm a big fan of the 98 and as i write this i have a VZ-24 action that i am looking over and i can't understand why it would be any harder to duplicate with CNC machining and EDM technology as a model 70. I realize the bolt shroud and safety would add to the cost of the action but these were made a long time ago and surely with modern methods we could do it again for less than $2500 an action, With modern steels and heat treating. Nothing exotic, Just 4140 chrome moly and precise machining utilizing all of the 98s features with a sporter bolt handle and 3 position M70 safety. I'd love a Hein or GMA but way too rich for me, How about it all you engineers, Can an action be done right for $1000 today?

Remington 798! About $550 ****************************************************************** R. Lee Ermey: "The deadliest weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle." ****************************************************************** We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! The real question here is what is the market for actions.....how many folks want them at: $1,000 each..... or $750 each...or $500 each. I think you'll find the number of tire kickers to be large......the number of buyers to be dismally small. Shooters do a better job of talking than walking! Try selling a heat treated VZ-24 rigged with a bolt handle job, Timney trigger, drilled and tapped, withg a three position safety installed for even $800.....the market isn't there! These are some of the best '98 Mausers ever made! There's a reason fine bottom metal runs $300 and over.....IMO the market is much smaller than we think! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." If you could make a mauser action identical to the G.33/40 for $300 a copy I bet you could sell quite a few of them to the "gun" crowd, which means the folks that hang out around here and 24 Hour and a few other forums. But not to the general public, unless you had a big advertizing budget. It will be interesting to see how Heim comes out making and selling their Mauser Action.

As far back as I can remember, someone from time to time comes up with this brainer and starts producing true Mauser actions at a good price, they sell a bunch of them at first and then the market disapears and they go broke, same with the M-70 pre 64 type action..
