Model 98 Design

boltfaceModel 98 Design
I have been reading from time to time about the difficulty of duplicating the model 98 action economically. I'm a big fan of the 98 and as i write this i have a VZ-24 action that i am looking over and i can't understand why it would be any harder to duplicate with CNC machining and EDM technology as a model 70. I realize the bolt shroud and safety would add to the cost of the action but these were made a long time ago and surely with modern methods we could do it again for less than $2500 an action, With modern steels and heat treating. Nothing exotic, Just 4140 chrome moly and precise machining utilizing all of the 98s features with a sporter bolt handle and 3 position M70 safety. I'd love a Hein or GMA but way too rich for me, How about it all you engineers, Can an action be done right for $1000 today?
Remington 798! About $550

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! 'What the hell could possibly go wrong?'

jeffeossoyes... and no one bought them
legacy mauser action
when empire switched to their own actions, poof! went the market...
it seems no one will pay 600 for a mauser action, but will pay 3K for a(notmadeby)mauser action

vapodogThe real question here is what is the market for actions.....how many folks want them at:
$1,000 each..... or
$750 each...or
$500 each.
I think you'll find the number of tire kickers to be large......the number of buyers to be dismally small. Shooters do a better job of talking than walking!
Try selling a heat treated VZ-24 rigged with a bolt handle job, Timney trigger, drilled and tapped, withg a three position safety installed for even $800.....the market isn't there! These are some of the best '98 Mausers ever made!
There's a reason fine bottom metal runs $300 and over.....IMO the market is much smaller than we think!

If you could make a mauser action identical to the G.33/40 for $300 a copy I bet you could sell quite a few of them to the "gun" crowd, which means the folks that hang out around here and 24 Hour and a few other forums. But not to the general public, unless you had a big advertizing budget.
It will be interesting to see how Heim comes out making and selling their Mauser Action.

AtkinsonAs far back as I can remember, someone from time to time comes up with this brainer and starts producing true Mauser actions at a good price, they sell a bunch of them at first and then the market disapears and they go broke, same with the M-70 pre 64 type action..
