I got a barrel from a guy that was originally chambered for 7-08 but for some reason, he rechambered it for 7x57 except that the 7-08 is a larger diameter that the 7x57. What should I do with it? Will a 280 work or do I need to go to a 7 mag to get past the 7-08 diameter?

You have two choices.....7MM Mag or if you like...the Ackley Improved version of the 7 X 57 or the .280

depends on the barrel...
should be set back and rechambered for whatever you like.. the 280 will not clean it up as is

setback and rechamber should be far cheaper than rebarrel or converting to a mag

Just a thought but would the 284 Win clean up with a bit of shortening?

Yes, BUT it would require quite a bit of shortening. I believe the .284 would have been the best choice originally, to increase the power of the 7mm/08 a little....

Mr Kobe's idea to go to the .284 Win is truly excellent and the amount of shortening is one thread with a 16 pitch thread.

Where is the unusual amount of shortening comeing from?....Am I missing something?
