I seem to be drawn to a .250 Savage gun, but given that they are few and far between for sale, I am contemplating having one built. BUT not a lot of funds. So my question is what should I look for in a donor action/gun. Is it simply a barrel swith? Do bolts need work? Feeding issues? Shoudl I look to a Remington or Savage for least expensive? thanks Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum

Hikerbum I just had one built and I used a Remington XP-100R action. I also used a model 7 stock and bottom metal. My .250 is an AI also so I have to make cases but that part of the fun. Any short action with a .308 bolt face will work fine. Rich

You can shop around and find a used 250 in a Ruger 77 in several variations and that would be your best buy I think. Rem also made a few of them a few years ago...Your taste in caliber is exquisite. The .250-3000 is a fine cartridge. I have shot elk and deer with it and it never let me down. Have you considered a Savage M-99 F or EG in that caliber. HikerBum I'd take Jim Kobe up on his model 7 action, and have him barrel it and stock it too. He is reasonable in price and his guns do shoot too. He re barreled a .243 for me a while back and I was real pleased with his work and turn around time. Rich
