Donor action question

I seem to be drawn to a .250 Savage gun, but given that they are few and far between for sale, I am contemplating having one built. BUT not a lot of funds.

So my question is what should I look for in a donor action/gun. Is it simply a barrel swith? Do bolts need work? Feeding issues? Shoudl I look to a Remington or Savage for least expensive?

thanks

Hikerbum I just had one built and I used a Remington XP-100R action. I also used a model 7 stock and bottom metal. My .250 is an AI also so I have to make cases but that part of the fun. Any short action with a .308 bolt face will work fine. Rich

coffeeShaw made my barrel, deep throated for 120gr. bullets, and I put it on a Stevens Mod. 200 that was bought new for $300.00 out the door. Not Supreme by any stretch of the imagination but light and totally adequate in performance. Fun Gun! thumbroger

Hikerbum,

I have a Rem model 7 complete action for sale. It has already been blueprinted.

Email me if interested.

You can shop around and find a used 250 in a Ruger 77 in several variations and that would be your best buy I think. Rem also made a few of them a few years ago...Your taste in caliber is exquisite. The .250-3000 is a fine cartridge. I have shot elk and deer with it and it never let me down.

Have you considered a Savage M-99 F or EG in that caliber.

HikerBum I'd take Jim Kobe up on his model 7 action, and have him barrel it and stock it too. He is reasonable in price and his guns do shoot too. He re barreled a .243 for me a while back and I was real pleased with his work and turn around time. Rich

Thanks for all the feedback. Ray, I have seen the savage 99's but not much into lever guns.

Jim, PM sent with some questions.

thanks

bartsche's answer is on the money. i've done it twice. once for a 250/3000 and most recently for a 257 roberts. for the roberts i bought a stevens 200 in 25/06for $287 & change, set the barrel back, chambered for roberts and had the rifle i wanted.

EekerBought three more Steven's mod. 200s last week, just for barrel swapping I guess. Might be getting to the end of the trail and don't want to arrive there empty handed. Empty headed is all right.

That now makes 7. homer shockerroger
