I have a question for you-all? I want to build a 458x2", and I am unsure of which action I should use. I have on hand a BRNO 9822, or buy a used mag bolt rifle and rebarrel? Which action would your preference be? It's going to be the equalivant of a bolt action 45-70, using cast bullets on Kaliforniastan Hogs. Thanks in advance Mike

I think there was a 450 Marlin on sale here a few months ago either built on a Remington Model 7/600/660, or a short action 700.

if you must have a bolt action in a short action do a 458 win mag with 45-70 bullets to use up all the short action mag length and use all off the shelf stuff. save money and have more power if you want win mag dies and reamer and reg win mag brass. or buy a 450 marlin browning blr. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. At one time Winchester chambered the SA M-70 from the custom shop in .450 Marlin.....this may help you a bit. Something to consider....shorten the .375 Ruger brass and neck it to 2" X.458 and stuff it in a '98 Mauser. You'll be done with the belt and have lots of room for long lead bullets. Mexican Mausers will do this as well as the M-24/47 yugos! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I have for sale or trade a custom 450 Marlin built on a Ruger stainless steel MK II short action, which was originally a 350 Rem Mag. It has a 20" long Pac-Nor stainless #5 barrel with 20" twist rate. It has a Hoag stock with the full bedding block. I also have new RCBS dies, and 50 rounds of new brass. Save yourself some trouble, and just buy or trade for my 450 Marlin/Ruger. Let me know if you are interested. Thanks. Don't want a 450 marlin. I'll have much better brass availability with a 458x2, any belted mag case and just shorten a bit. Still curious about a belted mag on a mauser? Mike

I built mine on a vz24 action using a midway barrel and a richards micro-fit stock. I cut .458 brass down with a a fine tooth electric band saw and then trim to fit. I have killed one bear with mine and one small deer. I truly enjoy shooting it but the rifle is a bit heavy for so short a cartridge. Next time I would use Ruger 77 donor to begin with. Frank

A Remington 673 in 350 ought to serve as a donor; a fella can reuse the wood but that barrel rib has got to go into the roundfile in any case. With a Marlin chamber you can buy brass or ammo off the shelf today. When the Marlin goes Tango Uniform and you run out of factory brass you can have a smith set the barrel back and rechamber. Until then no need to make cases or buy custom dies.
