I'm tired of cartridge "hate" threads. (No reflection on anyone; just want a change of pace.) Which cartridges do you own and shoot?

My collection thus far consists mostly of old military rifles.

I own the following:

Rifle
22lr
6.5x55
7x57
30-06
.303 British
7.62x54r
8x57JS

Revolver
357 Magnum

Shotguns
.410
20 Gauge
12 Gauge

The 7.62x54r is the most accurate with open sights and the 8x57JS is very effective against whitetail deer!

[Edited: I remembered a couple calibers I forgot. Plus I don't want anyone to get a wrong impression - we're all friends here!]

Here the List some I have more than one rifle in.

223 wssm
22-250 rem
257 stw
270 win
7mm RUM
7mm Rem mag
308 win
30-06
338 Lapua
416 REM Mag
5.56 nato
7.62 nato
7.62 X 39
22 LR

The 270 win and 308 are death to white tails I never hae shot one twice with either gun.

My favorites are the two 7.62 nato's (M1A's) I don't hunt game with them, but they would be my choice fore the Ultmate Hunt.

I hope you didnt consider my thread a "hate" thread. That was not my intent at all. I was just curious about what calibers people dislike and especially the "why".

But I am glad you started a thread with a more positive tone. Because it is much more fun to talk about the calibers I like.

Here is what I own and shoot:

Rifle:
.22 long rifle
.223 Rem
.243 Win.
.308 Win - my personal favorite for many reasons
.30/06
.300 Win Mag
.30/30
.30/40
.303 British
.32 Win Spc
.338 Win Mag
.35 Brown Whelen Imp.
.357 Mag
.375 H&H
.40/65
.44 Mag
.45/70
.45 Colt
.458 Win Mag
6.5/06 AI
6.5x55
7x57
7.5x55 Swiss
7.5 MAS
7.62x54R
8x56R
8x57
9.3x57

Pistol:
.22 long rifle
.223 Rem (Contender)
.32 ACP
.357 Mag
.44 Mag
.45 Colt
.45 ACP
9mm
10mm

I thoroughly enjoy shooting all the calibers I own. I do have my preferences though. And usually those are based on what the application I will be using it for.

Like TEX21 I love my military surplus rifles. They are a blast to shoot and have so much history associated with them. If only they could talk. Some of the funnest hunting I have ever done has been for whitetails and hogs using old battle rifles. The old milsurps dont get the respect they deserve in my opinion.

Black Powder Dixie arms flint lock in .45
repro Enfield in 56 cal

Several .22 long rifles by Winchester, Stevens, Remington, and Browning

Centerfire:
.270 Win.

Pistols and revolvers:
.32-20 x2
Several in .38 Spl
.41 Rimfire x2
.44 S&W American
Several in .45 Acp
several in .45 Colt

Other minor and assorted firearms

I tend to love what I am shooting at the time, and do not dislike any out of hand.
I re-load or most of these and have amunition for all of them in varous amounts.
I just love to shoot, fix, buy, sell and trade firearms. Some are family guns that I would not sell or trade.

My current want is a custom Mauser in .416 Rigby to shoot those really big Alabama Whitetails with.

Is it safe to let for a 58 year old man run around in the woods unsupervised with a high powered rifle?

Well I looked as I did not know myself but there are 26 calibers of rifles ( I don't shoot the Win. 73 in 38/40) and 10 calibers of pistols and 4 gauges of shotguns. Guess I am guilty of using all but the one now and then.
