It depends if you want machinable (HD) tungsten or tungsten carbide. If you're only looking for weight, try looking in the used tool bin of any machine surplus store for 1" carbide end mills. I don't think you're going to find any cheap sources of machinable tungsten in that size. Here's a couple resources you can also try. Mi-Tech Metals Midwest Tungsten Service -- ale

What I'm looking for is the weight. Need something heavier than lead that doesn't take up as much room. I'm no metallurgist. Maybe you guys can direct me... what type of "tungsten" do I need for maximizing weight?

I have a lot of tungsten carbide. You can get a 1" cylinder and fill it with the used tungsten carbide and then pour epoxy resin into it. You just need to make a mold the size of your finished product. I make weights that way to put in the butt of as BR rifle for weight and balance. Let me know if you want to go that route. Butch

If you got a buddy in the military, see if he can filtch some spent uranium, that's heavier than Tungsten. Jim Kobe 10841 Oxborough Ave So Bloomington MN 55437 952.884.6031 Professional member American Custom Gunmakers Guild

some time back I posted asking how to harden/temper a center punch- took a shellacking for it, too ![]() some genius suggested I use 20mm uranium shells- worked out OK, though, so far I've only detonated three of them. not as cool as richj's pinewood derby link, but close: http://www.unitednuclear.com/uraniumnew.htm

Butch - is this a powder that i mix with epoxy?

No, I just have a lot of used mill and lathe inserts. If you stack them right they will weigh almost as much as a solid bar. We could do a little trading and I really don't have a lot of use for them. You wouldn't have to come up with much. Butch

http://www.tungstenheavypowder.com/Tungsten_Heavy_Powde...powder_products.html if the tungsten pieces are not packed tightly, the overall result will not be much heavier than lead. 20% voids - not much - results in a density only about 20% heavier than lead. powder might be the way to go.

Have you tried mixing the powder? It ain't easy. Butch

One of the coolest things I ever saw was a depleted uranium penetrator dart from an Abrams tank gun that a guy had for sale at a gun show. It looked like a black rocket of some kind, was very sharp on the point, and very heavy. If I had dropped it point down from waist high it would have nailed my foot to the floor. I kick myself repeatedly for not forking over the $40 he wanted for it. ![]()

Didn't Cheaperthandirt.com used to sell those penetrators a while ago? I remember seeing them somewhere as while ago and shoulda snagged up a few of them. "Molotov Cocktails don't leave fingerprints" -Dr. Ski
