I'm thinking either a 1909 Argentine or a VZ-24. I am on the right track?

Pros or cons of each?

Thanks.

In those actions a .416 Ruger will save you costs and heartache.

For the .416 Taylor try a standard length magnum action (ie ex .300WM or 7mmRM) and feed issues will be minimised.

the 24 would be my choice, slightly longer mag, more than likly harder steel.

i would also suggest the 416 ruger, as it is greater case capacity.. if the ruger wasn't there, i would suggest the 416 AccRel, as it is even larger .. a taylor just isn't worth doing with the ruger factory round "right there" in my opinion ...

2250 with 400gr bullets should be your target, as the 416 taylor is smaller than, well, almost all other 416s, in terms of capacity .. very much smaller than the 416 remington .. and "everyone" complains that a 416 remington can't get to 2400 without "serious pressure" .. QED, the taylor must have higher pressure

+1 tu2 I had one years ago. Sold it. Like Jeff said I would look to the 416 Ruger or his 416 AccRel. The Taylor made sense before the other cases were available.

As usual just my $.02

Either is fine, I have done 3 of each from 30-06 to 458wm. The + for the Arg is the bottom metal. Good luck on your project & post picts. Wink

Thanks guys!

Jeffe,

What is the parent case for the .416 AccRel and what is capacity compared to the Ruger?

Click on the links in Jeff's post. The parent I believe is the 375 RUM case shortened and improved. Or you can actually buy brass with the correct head stamp already formed.

I built a 416 T just before the Ruger 375 came out using a Ruger Tang action. I also built a 9,3.62 on a VZ-24 action. Both actions are adequate...BUT...

While both actions are long enough and I can seat the 350 Speer 416 cal bullet to 3.25" in the cannelure, it would be better to have used a full length 3.60" action so the longer 400 gr bullets could be seated out a bit farther giving a little bit more case volume.

The VZ-24 action has the same problem...~3.315" being the mag length and you might have to resort to a shorter seating length which may or may not be a problem, and of course, there are workarounds.

I built the mauser because I never built one before and wanted to learn how...I used the Ruger Tang because I had a couple of extra receivers lying around without barrels...but it cost as much or more than an off the shelf rifle to do the mauser even though I did ALL the required work...as to which is preferable, only you can decide.

Today if I were going to do a 416 cal I would go with the 416 Ruger if I didn't want to muck about reloading or 416 AR if I were a reloader. Both out do the 416 Rigby of old and have many arguably better qualities...or go with a CZ 416 Rigby to start with. Todays loading of the Rigby but it in a different class altogether...arguably.

Many decisions, many choices, but lots of fun no matter which way you jump.

Luck

I'd use a Model 70 Classic action that has a magnum boltface!

1. 3 position safety
2. trigger
3. bolt face
4. rails/feeding
5. magazine box
6. bolt handle
7. polishing

FOOBAR, the 416 AR and 416 Ruger outdo factory 416 rigby loadings or actually have larger case capacities? I have a taylor being built so don't read up on the 416's much, if I were buying one I'd just get a cz already done in rigby, but am curious about the capacities of them all.

tu2

But I wouldn't build a .416 Taylor.....it'd be a .416 Ruger.

I built mine on a vz and had no trouble shooting 400's.
Reloading makes a huge difference in getting the most from your rifle.
If going to buy it would be a Rigby.

yet, if one used a ruger, one also has qucik detach, return to zero scope mounts included ...

the parent case for the AccRel is the 375 rum .. fireform, trim, done.
the 375 ruger case is unique (no, its not a bleeding newton)

the taylor is the smallest, the ruger and rem are about 11.7 gr h2o, the accrel is 16.4gr larger, and the rigby about 36 gr larger than the taylor.

the rigby loaded to "low pressure" 44kcup .. about 50k psi

the ruger and remington are loaded to 63,000psi

the 416 AR can easily hit 2500, but at 2400 fps, it is, observed, to be lower pressure than the ruger or remington

the taylor, being such a smaller case, obviously has to run higher pressure

oal of the accrel, ruger, and taylor are the same.

Yes, but then one would have to put up with an ugly rifle!
