Intermediate length Mauser and 30-06 length cartridge?

I'd like to make another rifle with a surplus Mauser action. I'm only finding intermediate length actions at the big 4 or 5 surplus houses (M24/47 Yugoslavian actions). Will a 30-06 length cartridge (i.e. .300WM, .338WM, .416 Taylor, etc) fit in these? If not, is the magazine box the limiting factor? If I replace the magazine box will it fit/work?

Thanks,

Steve

My Vz-24 magazine maximum is 3.25". This limits the cartridge OAL to about 3.22 to 3.23" for good functioning.

the 48 is what, .125 shorter than a standard? Z1R, i know you know, is that right?

if so, opening then form 3.15 to 3.35 is going to be a mild struggle.

unless you are doing the work yourself, buy a vz

jeffe

I did a 48 in '06 once and wouldn't do it again. I used 150 or 165 gr round nose bullets seated deep enough to fit the magazine. It worked, but defeated the purpose. If I were to do it again, I'd go with a 308 or something in the "x57" family.

I agree with the others in that the action is not the best choice for the '06. I believe Jeffe is right that the action is about .125" shorter than a stadard 98. The magazines measure 3.230" while a standard 98 like the vz24 measures 3.310"

Interestingly enough, all the factory .30-06 ammo I've checked (not all for sure) measured less than 3.230" and will fit the magazine.
