Best Action For a 45/70 - Not Siamese

If I want to have a bolt action 45/70 built that holds two rounds in magazine, what action would be the best fit? I know the Siamese would be the best choice, but they are scarce as hen’s teeth.

Can a M98 be modified to feed this round without a lot of work or maybe a Mosin or a SMLE?

There was a mob building 45-70's on Lee Enfields a while back and I think you can still buy the mags.

Could you fit one into a P14?
DPCD would be the one to ask, he does some neat stuff.

Uncle Grinch, if I wanted to build a 45/70 I'd be sending a PM to RandyB to see how mush he wants for that Siamese Mauser action.

Built many;
1. They of course work well on the Siamese and after all, it's a Mauser. But FAR superior to those junk German ones; they were made in Japan.
2. Enfields; done a few on those, but, while Navy Arms opened up the receiver to accommodate the rim, I lathe turned rims down so they will fit through the action; and the brass still works in all other 45-70s. No need to weaken the receiver.
3. Mosins; more work, but very strong.
4. P14? bolt face is a challenge; see #2 above.
5. Think about a 450 Marlin or 458 American. Then you can use any action you want. I've done two of those.
6. Standard 98; Just no.

Tom,

Great info to have before starting a build. I had a Siamese that E R Shaw built back in the 70’s. It wasn’t MOA accurate, but with peep sights and cast bullets I killed quite a few deer and some hogs with it. I sold it three years ago to a fellow gun club member who tempted me too many times with cash.

Still have my Marlin CB, but I miss my Mauser.

I have built three over the years out of sporterized SMLE actions and Boyd stocks. If you go that route I can give you a pattern for modifying the magazine that works slick

if i where to do a mauser, i'd do a mexican mauser, and more than likely do it in 450 marlin, but could be done in 45/70
