This is a 257 Roberts I just finished on a pre-'64 model 70 barreled action furnished with a stock blank from a fellow out east. The stock was done from the blank and features a Neidner checkered buttplat, steel grip cap, inletted sling swivel studs, wrap around 24 LPI checkering, and an oil finish. The metal was refinished in a hot blue with matte action and plished blue on the rest of the metal.

one of my vavorite cartridges , and a beautifully done rifle.
You, I am sure will have a very happy customer.
It looks nicely slim and trim, as a Roberts should. I don't like a lot of extra wood on the stock , and as I said that is slim and trim.
A rifle like that is about all a guy needs to hunt game under about 400 LBS.
I am curious what kind of scope will be used.
I have a leupold VX3 1.5X8 on one of my Roberts and it is about perfect. And one thing about leupolds is they look great on a prety rifle.

Yes, it is nice, I even said so.

But then again, many blemishes can be hidden depending on how you take the picture and by how small a picture you post.

I saw the gun in person this afternoon, it is every bit as nice as the pictures.

Jim did the work for me from a pre-64 action (originally a .257 Roberts) that I had barreled at the Douglas factory by Fred Depoy before he retired from Douglas. I haven't seen this rifle yet (I'll get it in a couple weeks), just pics, but if it's as nice as the first one he did for me - a .375 H&H on a Sako action - I'll be sending him a third project in the not-too-distant future. For me, his work gets you a lot of value for the dollar, & a fine piece of gunsmithing.

That rifle he refers to that was at the ACGG show was built for an egraver friend of mine. When I showed up at the show I got the usual "when are you going to Join?"

I told the group of guys that were there that I had a stock I did in the show and to go and look at it and give me some feedback (criticism if you will) and tell me what is wrong with it.

No fewer than five of the members who looked at it remarked it was well done. One even said "we need this guy".

The members who looked included no less than Jerry Fisher, Al Lind, Gary Goudy, Kent Bowerly, Steve Bileb, Dennis Potter and I think Duane Weibe even looked at it. I got a rccomendation from three of those guys to apply next year with one more project.

If that butt plate was "proud" of the stock, it is a simple matter to dress it down. If it was proud, thanks for pointing that out to me. You are a better man than the last five guys I indicated above.

Jim, I really like the lines and the color of that stock.

With the wrap-around checkering, the steel grip cap, the beaded cheekpiece and the curved, checkered buttplate, it really looks sharp.

Nice work to make that from a blank!

Let us all ask ourselves what kind of person sees the need to come into a thread like this and nitpick anothers work and make accusations of poor quality? It is obvious that Jims work is better than most while at the same time, like all true craftsmen knows there is always room for improvement. I don't care who the gunmaker is, if he thinks he's at the pinnacle of the craft with no room for growth he's probably not even in the top 25%. So just who is this Rem721 character to think he's in the position to be judge and jury? If you knew the man behind the alias would you send him your work? And yes he is in the business, he's not retired as he likes to indicate.

I enjoy all the levels of work shared here from the amateur hobbyist to the pros. Most of them including those near the top like Wiebe and others still are open to new ideas while equally sharing their talents and experiences. This is what makes the forum IMO.

The stock is gorgeous.....and I have sent you a PM regarding my need to have a stock finished for a barreled action I have.

I have to agree---I was at the show as well and the pictures are not even close to being detailed enough to see if the work performed is indeed Guild Quality.

Post MUCH better pics showing the metal to wood fit in the action, trigger guard, butt plate area, close up of the checkering, and my favorite the "peak"..... Then people can give a fair assessment of your work rather than feel good comments which is what we have so far...

Just telling the truth here...

Looks like a really great job Jim! Just one technical question if I can, did you have to go back and repoint the checkering on the buttplate or just use it like it comes?

Looks like a good job on a nice rifle to me, but, after 45 years, 100+ mostly highend rifles, what would I know.

Whats realy creepy is he posts under 2 maybe 3 different screen name identitys even on the same threads and has been doing it for years. Complements his own work under another screen name too. unbeleivable

If some of you fellows know who "rem721" is. Why not list his real identity, so that he may be avoided, from a business standpoint? All he does is put down the work of others. Have yet to see him post examples of his work, for critique. I sure as hell don't ever want to do business, with such a person.
