All: I recently obtained a rifle blank (Walnut) that I would like to use on a rifle for my son. In review of the grain patten, it appears that on the wrist the grain is not as straight as it should be. When others reviewed the blank, they said that it would be more than adequate for a lighter cartridge. I'm thinking of a .308. I would need the stock formed for me, and a number of places I have contacted have quoted prices in the 1000s of dollars. I'm thinking about purchasing a barrelled action in .308 from Montana Rifleman. If I were to do that, what do you think it would cost to have someone shape and inlet the blank for the barrelled action? I would like to do the finishing of the stock myself. Can anyone give me some guidance on what to do? Thanks, 577NitroExpress

Rod Rogers at Serengetti has the Montana action dialed into his stock business. I would imagine it would be your best bet for economy. I do not have a contact for them but someone should pop up with it soon.

Jeffeosso: I believe MRM actions on based on the Model 70 (maybe pre-64) actions. Not 100% sure though. I have seriously considered an after market rifle chambered in .308 (or the like) and re-stocking it. I would like to do the final finishing/sanding/grain filling/etc. myself to have something that personally worked on to give to my boy. Jeffeosso, do I read correctly from your message that you can duplicate stocks for certain barrelled actions? If so, I would love to talk with you about moving forward on my project and buying a donor gun. I think you can turn a winchester inlet into a MRC but not the other way around. I think a person really needs to come up with a number they're wanting to spend and then try to get the most bang for the buck inside that pre set limit. Serengeti can produce a completely finished stock for the quotes your getting to work your blank. You can also get one in various stages of completion and do the work yourself to finish it. Of course it is a laminate and some people have issues with that. The Bastogne stock I ordered was very nice and the laminate process didn't distract from that a bit. ______________________ Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.
