well, we sure enough had a day....

i wonder how east texas gator checkerin will go over in kaliphornia!!!

see mike, i've left you plenty of wood for your excellent wood to metal fitting

as you can see, i left a guide hole for the thumbhole, as you request

at this point, i feel the stock is ready for final sanding and painting... at least if it was a GAG stock

here's the cast of holigans that decending about the porter house

here's the basic line up of the stock

and some of the first cuts

Mike,
jana was out of 40 grit on the belt sander, for your finial sanding... i had to use the cedar flooring stripper... it's just a little lower grit than the belt sander, but the blue paint should build up enough thickness to just blunt the gator checkerin enough to not catch mesquete thorns..... and if you would jab the barrel into the mud next to a tree, i think you could use it for an emergency ladder...

she is mixing the red and the off-white... seems that her can of kilz had hardened up too much to use... so we had to get a new can and she's mashin some raspberries, they are called dewberries down here... not to be mixed up with dingleberries in san-fran... with the kilz... i think they are the only substance in the world that can stain kilz...

billy thought the 7inch angle grinder was a little too unweildy for him to inlett those finer metal bits... so i had to run over to home depot to get some cutoff abrastive for the 4.5 inch grinder... it only got away from him a little, and only groove the front gator checkerin a little.

i am thinking that if you don't like the red white and blue paint schemea, well, we have some frog green and sod-brown krylon around here somewhere... i find to be a damn fine camo pattern if you put the stock and the two cans of spray paint in a box, tape it up firmly, and let it sit out in the east texas sun... you need to get this out before noon... after about an hour in the sun, the cans will cook off, popping the other with it, and performing what the military calls a non-repeating, random, coloring pattern...

well mike, we hope you really like how it turns out....

here's a movie of the can's poping in the sun...

oh, why not after noon... after about 2pm it's too hot to not have a flashover... and that's a charred finished, rather than painting

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Yes it really was alot of fun. I got to see some of ForrestB's collection, learned alot, made some good contacts & friends. I think it should be an ongoing thing, maybe a big bore shoot at a private range, hunting trip like Rusty's double gun society, etc. Thanks guys, ForrestA.

i really enjoyed ya'll...

one of the things that i think is great about must gun people is that they are what i call Self Contained... a phrase that means, to me, that yep, they will be together and have a great time, but don't REQUIRE someone to do for them. Which usually means that they are more than willing to do for someone else. This used to be a core american trait, that of the community of equals that didn't require being told what and how to do.

i am proud to have had you gentlemen at my home

here's some pics of the finished stock

Gene, i'll grind on that pad for ya.... get a kitchen pass and come over any evening this week, if you like.. bring the ruger and the pad
