i THINK it was 2000, 2001, or 2002 .. it had so much torgue that it kept breaking the driveshaft yokes .. duramax?

why do i ask? I want to do a school bus to RV conversion, and I want a strong motor to haul us around . . if i can find this motor, I might could get it cheap, and drop it in a GMC schoolie ...

i KNOW, i should just go lay down and wait till it passes

This isn't a common problem, and usually was due to another driveline failure, like a UV joint going out first and then the drive shaft would get twisted up. Yokes breaking seem to be even rarer, unless you are sled pulling or have a jacked up truck where the driveline angle has not been done properly.

2000 was the first year of the durmax line and they pretty much have the same drivetrain though 2009. (at least the 2500HD)
lby 2000-2004 300hp 600ftlbs
lly 2004-2006 same
lbz 2006-2007 305hp 625ftlbs
lmm 2007-2009 forget quess it is ~ 310 hp and 650ft lbs
lml 2009- not released yet but 390hp and 700ft lbs.

The sled pullers would boost all of the these engines to ~ 400 to 600hp with tuners and ~ 900 to 1100 ftlbs torque.

The aluminum driveshafts had some problems early-on.
More importantly--
Do not buy a Duramax older than '05.

The injectors are inside the valve covers and the lift pump is inside the valley.

Loose a seal and you flood the crankcase with diesel--

ask me how I know
X 3 Mad

Great engines for torque and fuel use.

But a serious design flaw in the fuel system up to '05.

My favorite diesel-

the Navistar 6.9's and 7.3's
basically bulletproof.

Everybody that I know that has the Dodge Cummings diesel, really likes it.

There was one class C Motor home company [Scott???] that used them. They still got over 20 miles a gallon.

You need a 4BT with common rail. You will be amazed at the power! Or find an old 12 valve. PM me for more on this resource.

Another option would be to find an older IH bus with a 345 gasser and leave it alone!

I love my Cummins too. 5.9 HO last year without a cat, 6spd man, SMARTY! Clutch soon to be replaced, methanol injection coming to keep her cool..........It is an addiction.

Apparently Jeffe knows nothing of the 345. It is the only gasser other than a 300I6 Ford I would ever have.

The 345 was a goody.

But so were the the Jimmy 401 V-6 and the 292 I-6 .

Had the 345 on a 1 tom Forest Fire truck and the IL6 300 cui Ford in a work truck. Loved them both. Now I have a Cummings and will never go back.

06 2500 ram 4X4 w/ 5.9 cummins. Took nearly 40k miles just to get the engine broken in (not enough hauling). So long as I can keep idiots from totaling me out on the commute, it should be the last truck I ever buy.

I know folks like to bash dodge trucks, but for a basic truck, solid axles, manually shifted transfer case, I've been very happy with it. I've been tempted to chip it, but it pulls my boat like it isn't even there, and I can pass people pulling the boat up mountain passes.

Kinda funny asside, my co-worker has a chevy and we were coming back from a fishing trip pulling the boat through the mountains and came up on a dooly doddling along pulling a trailer. It was a chevy Wink

Well,
Say what you want. My 2002 Duramax 4x4 will have 240,000 miles on it when we return to Texas from Kalifornia this weekend. I have replaced the waterpump, 1 front hub, and alternator. I still have the original brake pads. I have yet to have any vehicle that dependable. I hooked a chain to my nephews 2007 clummings and pulled him all over the parking lot.
Jeffe, they are lighter and have better fuel economy.

The GM diesels that broke crankshafts where the late 1970s, and early to mid 80s. The diesels that were nothing more than V-8 gas motors that were converted to diesel by General motors. The extra compression needed for diesels were more than the gas cranks could handle. The bigest offenders were in Cadillac cars! This is the same period when GM started puting Chevy motors in big Cadillac, and olds, and Pontiac cars, and Vega auto transmissions in 4800 pound Cadillacs, with a result that almost did GM in for good, and remains thier reputation, deserved or not, even today, for junk.
