Hey Everyone,

I know I might catch some S&*T for this question, but here goes. I have a Guide gun and an 1894 in 44 mag. I love them both and have hunted and killed a lot of things with them. However I hate the cross bolt saftey. I feel it in unnecesary on a lever which is carried with the hammer down. I worry it will be slipped on accidentally and will cause me to miss out on a shot.

HOW CAN I DISABLE THE POS SAFTEY????
I doubt Marlin in these saftey/litigous concious times will have an answere for me.
This saftey and the buckhorn sights that I have replaced for peep sights are the only flaws I can find in 2 otherwise great guns.

THANKS

You can purchaqse a cross bolt deletion kit from Clyde Ludwig, it runs about $10.00. it contains a blank that is machined to look like an action screw. It takes about 5 minutes to remove and replace the crossbolt safety and it comes with all needed parts to do the job. I do not have his address in the office but if you run a scearch at http://www.marlinowners.com, the infor will come up. I have 3 Marlins that I have used the kits on.

Buckeye,

Thanks a lot, I found what you were talking about. I am going to order one for each of my guns.

I lockwired mine with .040 lockwire and I guarantee it wont move to the safe position, wrap it twice and twist a pigtail nice and tight and your problems are over.

If you want a very neat looking and easily removed solution, just slip a small O-ring over the groove.

I'm sure I'm in a minority here, but while I'm not totally enamored with the safety on Marlins, it is a very nice feature if you use a scope.

As someone who has seen a lever action fire while being unloaded, the safety prevents any such action. It also is handy if you have a scope mounted and want to lower the hammer. I don't care if you do it a 1000 times, it can slip and the gun can fire. Cold and/or wet hands can certainly exacerbate the situation. Hopefully if you're using the prime rule of gun safety, that is, safe muzzle control, there wouldn't be anything but embarrassment.

Just like a safety on any other gun, I think I'm capable of taking it off, or keeping it off when I need to shoot.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

Gatogordo,

You are right.

The reason I hate them is the way they were forced onto the gun by lawyers and law suits brought by assholes who refused to take responsibility for their unsafe and inappropriate handling of the gun that resulted in an accident which probably resulted in a death. Same problem with the 8 lb trigger pull and gun locks...same problem and the other problem is there is too much government involvement in things that belong to personal responsibility. They even teach it in school...law suits are the answer!!Let's take responsibility for our actions!!!

You know you don't HAVE to use it, right?

Not trying to be a smartellic, but you can leave the safety off at all times as if it wasn't there. I've been shooting Marlin levers for many years and used to despise the CS. That was until I picked up a newer model and realized it didn't make a bit of difference. I leave it off most of the time.

The problem is its too easy to "brush" it on without ever knowing you did. Now if you made a habit to hit the saftey as you thumbed the hammer back it wouldn't be an issue. But this is somthing that needs to totally engrained in the subconcious. The only way to do that is to practice it, like every time you pick the gun up, for months.

I agree that it is a useful item when unloading and cyeling rounds through the action. But if you don't practice taking the safety off, it will mess your hunt up big time.

The number one saftey is between your ears, use it wisely and the others are just redundant.

The last I took Hunter Education was about 5 years ago with my youngest. At that time, the levergun with an exposed hammer was listed as the most dangerous "first gun" to give a kid.

The problem indentified with kids and leverguns is the thumb slipping when raising or lowering the hammer from half-cock safety. (this is also the #1 cause of NDs with 1911-pattern pistols for folks who feel the need to carry hammer-down on a loaded chamber - AKA condition stupid)

Since the levergun is cheap and handy, it continues to be the "first gun" for the masses and the 30-30 will live on forever. Marlin and Winchester both added an additional safety.

I love the 1911 and it has a lot of safeties. By settling on one carry mode for the 1911 and practicing with it, I am very fast and I never hear a "click" when expecting a BANG. I've done the same with the Marlin CBS.

Well, at least have an OK day Smiler

An "O" ring or a "C" clip from the hardware store for about .25 cents works great on the Marlin safety.

Marshall Stanton has a very nice article on this topic here http://www.beartoothbullets.com/tech_notes/archive_tech_notes.htm/52 I especially like the idea of increasing the strength of the detent so that a fella can still use the hammer blocker when he wants to but is less likely to accidentally engage it.
