I bought a guide gun in 45-70 but haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. I wait every night for someone to break in my home so I can try it out. So far no luck.

Well------- I have a first year 1895 in 45/70, A cowboy 45/70 and a cowboy converted to 50 alaskan. They make fine close range guns in my opinion for game to 450 pounds. Unlike some here-- I want more power for dangerous stuff.

I've had a 45-70 for 28 years. There ain't much anyone says about them that I haven't heard many times. I don't really care, I know what it is and what it is capable of. But you wouldn't catch me hunting Cape Buffalo with one.

I love the jokes when somebody sees the bore of my guide gun. They really get a kick out of idea of a 400+gr bullet trucking downrange at a leisurely rate.

But I wouldn't bother with this cartridge if it weren't for the Guide Gun. I put up with getting the crap kicked out of me every time I touch the trigger just so that I can pack this little rifle around.

Well, at least have an OK day Smiler

I shoot an original Springfield Trapdoor. I don't feel one bit inadequate. She's a fine shootin' old pig and I could feed my family quite well if I had no other guns. Wink

Have a Marlin 1895 with 22" barrel (ballard rifling). Good looking and shooting rifle. Darn close to a moa shooter.

Had a Browning BPCR and Wesson$Harrington buffalo classic in 45-70 too. Both gone, but both were good shooters.

I'm not hunting cape buffalo in Maine. But I like lobbing big hunks of lead at deer, and hopefully a moose if I get picked in the moose permit drawing.

Talk about having a red-headed stepchild!

I have a H&R1871 Buffalo Classic and I love it. No apologies. An excellent gun at a great price.

Chuck Conners was a pussy. He was doing an appearance at the Calgary Stampede(IIRC) and took off leaving Johnny Crawford behind to fend for himself when a bull got loose. A rodeo clown rescued the kid. derf

Yeah, those are the hats, Boom.

I always liked Chuck Connors in his role as Lucas McCain, didn't hear the story about the loose bull at the Calgary Stampede before. Maybe he just didn't like Johnny Crawford?

Already there, but no levergun yet. Have a custom-built Remington rolling block for steel critters, and a Browning 1885 for furry ones.

I never feel bad when I have my Marlin 45-70 and a heavy load.At my range we have a heavy steel gong at 200 yds that was welded to a frame and had been shot at by just about everything including my .375 H&H. One day I was trying an Elmer Keith recomended 45-70 heavy load and my first shot broke the plate free and sent it flying......guess that sums it up!

Boom, you'll never hear any disparaging words from the band of bubbas for the 45-70, lever guns, or any other guns of the old west.

I sold a very nice Japchester 1886 & missed it so much I bought another. Now I'm thinking of getting a guide gun just for fun. It's a great old cartridge, nice walkin around gun in a Guide gun.
