Took delivery of my new Turnbull 50-110 Winchester the Saturday before Christmas. Bought a Browning 71 and sent it to Turnbull. He installed a 22" octagon barrel, full mag tube, added new forearm and Winchester "H" style checkering. Very nice work. Was ordered Feb. 9th. Pics to follow. Currently working up loads.

8 3/4 lbs. Initial loads are with IMR 3031. 54 grains with a 435 Cast Performance bullet was very mild to shoot, accuracy was not so good. Once I moved up to 60 and 62 grains, groups improved. Still fine tuning loads.

I like it! I have a Browning 1886 that was converted to 50-110. Yours looks more comfortable to shoot with that shotgun butt. I use IMR3031 in mine also.

Nice rifle. Turnbull do have the touch for those ´86/71s for sure.

Regarding the .50/110Wcf loaded in a modern 1886 reciever it´s a caliber that really do as a modern big game caliber. The most powerfull load I have read someone had in their .50ex was +2300ft/s with a 500grain slug. I am sure if Winchester did a production of 5000 guns in .50ex they would sell like hot cake. Grizzly ammo is I believe the only ones selling of- the-the-shelf ammo.
BTW. does anyone know who can make a 100% copy of the Winchester bulletmold in .50ex 450grain?.

Happy newyear.

Shot again yesterday, I am settling on 62 grains of 3031 under a Cast Performance 435 WFNGC bullet. Accuracy was 7/8" at 50 yards, not sure my eyes could hold anything decent at 100. My shots will be between 50-75 yards here in WI anyway. Recoil is not too badat 62, 64 though you are feeling it, but not unbearable.

I got one of the 86's they advertised for 2011. It was delivered 1st of the month but I'm out of the USA until March so my dealer has it now.
For the bullet mold --- try Buffalo Arms. they have a good selection and do custom work.

If you know the dimensions you could design it yourself on the Mountain Molds site. You could also check out Accurate Molds. If you want to push it hard though you would want to be able to add a gas check.

I do believe that if Winchester ever brought it back out in a 50-110, I would buy one just becasue of the "originality" of it. I really like my conversion though. I like the "71" style pistol grip/lever and the short octagon barrel and full mag tube. To me, it just looks and feels right. Someday down the road I may consider a similiar rifle in the 475 Turnbull too.

I like the 71 style gun too. I have to believe the 50-110 would be a good seller. No flies on the .475 Turnbull either,

Overall Length is 40 1/4". It handles very nicely and I cannot wait to carry it this year during our deer season. I am currently waiting on a higher front sight as I am shooting 5-6" high at 50 yards. I spoke with Todd at Turnbull and they are sending me a new, higher front sight to remedy the situation.

Thanks for the comments too.

Sometimes "leaning" yourself into the recoil can take a few inches down. It takes a little practice with lightweighed rifle and a heavy bullet..but its a technic and nothing else.
Looking foreward to see some results. Congratulationes on your Turnbull.50ex.

I took a real rat M71 and rebarreled and restocked it. 30" octagon barrel, full magazine, nice wood.

Thanks you all.

I have already now been on the AccurateMold & mountainmold sites

I am very keen of having a modern .50/110 M´86 buildt. As I see it from studying different the .50/110 is still the best when using a m86/71 platform.
I want a classic rifle trimmed for modern loads that will put the caliber into true big game hunting. Been looking at the .50Alaska, .510Kodiak too, but the .50/110 has the edge.

How do you figure that? I think or at least to my understanding, the 450 Alaskan, the 50 Alaskan, the 475 Turnbull & the 50-110 are all kind of in the same ballpark with energy delivered, they all max out about 4000 ftlbs or so,keeping loads at a safe pressure level, not that I would mind having a 50-110,in fact I will have one built sooner or later Big Grin

Very easy.

the 50 Alaska does 3999 ft/ibs..the 510 Kodiak does 4000 ft/ibs and at last the .50/110 does 4001 ft/ibs and it´s a Winchester.. lol

Well I have read here on this forum of leverfoks who push their ´86 in .50ex up to 2200 ft/sec with a 500grain bullet. That´s over 5300ft/ibs. Acually 2000 ft/sec with a 500grainer would do for me which still is over 4400 ft/ibs.

The 50 alaskan is loaded to an overall length of 2.55 inches, the 50-110 is 2.7 inches overall and I believe the 510 KE is also 2.7 inches.
If you are using a lever action, Winchesters are preferred for the longer rounds as they are able to withstand higher pressure than the Marlin and the marlin has a design limitation because of the mag tube needing a 'bump' or expanded area to allow 45/70 and larger rounds to feed from the mag tube to the chamber. Also, the thinnest part of the action is directly under the area where the barrel screws in over the mag tube. Marlin changed the way they cut the threads for more strength on the 450, 308me and 338me but it is still not as strong as an 86 or 71.
I have seen reports of 5000 lbs energy from the 510 KE but the gun writer claimed there was a 'special high strength' barrel used. The write up was in the book Big Bore Rifles and Cartridges.
I have a Marlin 50 Alaskan by Turnbull and now an 86 50-110 by Turnbull. Maybe I can do a side by side in spring when I return to the USA.

I forgot all about that book. From page 351-355 the .50 Alaska is featured. Just picked it out from the library.

Bill, a 510 Kodiak express in a Marlin can be pushed to 5400 ft. lbs with a 450 grain bullet and a 23" barrel. Mine was made by Mic McPhearson. He edited Cartridges of the world for several editions and had a write uup in guns magazine a couple of years ago on my rifle. It is slick. and 2 to 3" groups off hand at 100 yards. Max loads do kick quite a bit, even with a 10 lb rifle.
