I have decided that I can not live without a Marlin Guide gun, but so far the biggest thing I have shot is my 12 gauge. I want to start slow. Who makes the lightest recoiling factory loads? I'll just be plinking, so bullet type/weight mean nothing. Low power and low cost is what I am after now. How is the Cabelas bulk ammo, at $120 per 100, un-jacketed lead 405 grain bullet? thank you, Paul

Remington's 405gr SP loading is pretty tame stuff.

Any of the 405 grain cast bullet cowboy loads would be pretty light, including the Cabelas bulk 45-70 load. You learn something new everyday whether you want to or not.

Unfortunately, you can't get the PMC 350 grain FP 45-70 ammo anymore. Many miss it as it was around $18 a box. Try Conley Precision Cartridge 350 grain JFP 45-70 ammo. You learn something new everyday whether you want to or not.

The Remington factory 405 soft clocks 1200 fps from my ported Guide Gun, kicks like a 12 ga trap load, and renders whitetails well and truly dead. It's a fine place to start your work with your new Marlin.

The only factory stuff I ever fired outa my 1886 was some Rem 405 jacketed stuff. Yup, pretty mild stuff. Si tantum EGO eram dimidium ut bonus ut EGO memor
