As a new member- I have found this to be a most interesting and informative netplace.
***
Having done some research-there are some good threads on the 450 Alaskan and 50.
My experience with them in the lower 48 and Alaska is reliability and choose your bullets carefully.
I still prefer an 86 or an early Model 71.
Has anyone had any experience with Swifts
or Bearclaws?
Bush Man-are you out there?

My good experiences have been with Hawk bullets and Kodiak bonded-core(AK Bullet works.)Hawk bullets are amazing-period.Especially the 270 gr
in a 348 Ackley Improved-its a whole new caliber.Shoot something large-then watch...
(If your .348 is not what you expected-try some Hawk 200-180-or 250 gr. bullets-there is no comparison) Dave Scovill of Handloader Magazine-agrees...

I have had three(3) 450 Alaskans and one .50.
Harry McGowen at St. Anne, IL did the work.
They all fed well-and were reliable. My current 450s are both pre-war Model 71s-the 50 Alaskan is fine-if you are a guide and spend time in the alders. It is not as accurate as the 450s. But then again I have 22 and 24 in barrels. Accuracy AND velocity increase-
The 375/40 wildcats don't produce the ballistics in the
348 case-and the 348 case IS enough with the
450 and the 50.
Someone could get Hawk to make flatpoint 450 gr .475 bullets and then....

Hmmmmmm.

PS-
Since reliability is critical-I stick to around
2000 FPS or a little more-depending on the toughness of the bullet. Since 71s have slight
angles on their Browning-designed mortises
unlike the straight 86-
The 71 should have been left as a modern 86-and
many of the post-war changes were unnecessary.

Like safeties on current Marlin-Winchester lever actions. But these "improvements"
will get someone clawed or mauled by an irate grizzly who is not impressed by clicks or guns
that malfunction.

I have used Hawk 300gr .025jkt bullets and 400gr .035jkt bullets in my 450/400 double and 286 gr .035jkt bullets in my 9,3x74R double. They have given me almost 100% drop to the shot kill. [ONE pig ran about 20 feet.]
I really like them.

Everything else being equal a Swift or a Bearclaw ,I have used many of them too, will give deeper penetration, with a smaller frontal area.

I hope to use the Hawk 9,3 on a leopard this Oct.
