yup...the old 45-70 aint for cross canyon shootn but within 200 yards (90% of hunting)it will deliver...yes there is more than one way to skin a cat (or bear elk deer moose occasional ferrel cat and rabbid charging squirrell) i just like this way the article is a good read and i do like the fact he put two 540 grain super hard cast garrett hammerheads all the way through it! but all here can rejoice that they did not put like so many other covers put some small and trendy 4000 fps dart thrower 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. I'm glad to here it but we don't get that one around here.Garrett claims on his sight the 420 Hammerhead will shoot length wise through the largest Coastal Grizz at 200 yards and I believe it from the test I have seen. JB Young the bullet Caster had a client messing around with his 420 grain Crater Lites and penetration at 100 yards. He first had it loaded hot..about 2,000 fps and got 3-feet of penetration on wet newsprint at 100 yards then he slowed it to 1600 fps and penetrated the whole 6-feet of newsprint...Now thats penetration!!!! Thanks for the heads up on the ancient 45-70. Jayco

it seems that one of the moderators seems to think that a 45-70 is not a big bore...i put a similar post there and it was deleted...ive noticed a disdain for the 45-70 and lever guns in that board but thats no reason to delete it. i feel like i an adult at the kids table on thanksgiving...the 45-70 is not an unwanted stepchild...it may not go as fast as the modern non black powder big bores but with the right bullet it holds its own and then some...let my people go! 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. 540 gr seems to be a bit much. 300-400 gr seems be be the best range of weights to me for the 45-70. It's great that there are ever increasing numbers of factory loads and bullets for the cartridge !!When they laugh at your 45-70 it's proof that they have no clue.

Well it appears some will not except what the 45-70 can do with the right bullet and powder as shown in the Linebaugh Penetration test into "Yes" wet news papers...Owe well..Here is an example from that test. 600 Nitro Ex..900 gr FMJ..2316 fps..56 inches penetration. 505 Barnes..700 gr FMJ..2347 fps..56 inches penetration. 500 Nitro..570 gr FMJ..2150 fps..48 inches penetration. 458 Win Mag..500 gr FMJ..2260 fps..48 inches penetration. And the measly 45-70 with 540 grain Hammerheads at 1550 fps....55 inches of penetration. Looks to me like it should rate atleast a "Big Bore" as it does as well as most in penetration and better than some. The 45-70 has changed with new bullets like the 550 Crater/Hammerhead and the 405 Kodiak/400 Swift A-Frame/400 Woodleigh/350 North Fork/350 Swift A-Frame and the 300 grain Nosler and Barnes which put the bullets of the past for the old 45-70 and its SAAMI of 28,000 PSI way behind and some just can't except the 45-70 loaded to its potential will and has killed about all that walks this earth not to say it is the best choice for DG in Africa...But it works...
