Beibs is still looking for the mountain he mistakenly calls McKinley that he thinks is out every day.

If you are still stuck tonight give me a call. Maybe we can meet for a drink.

Sundowners looking at Mckinley said Biebs - far better than anything Africa has to offer.

Then he said they bring cruise ships to Alaska just like in Caribbean. Just like St. Thomas with mountains and longer days.

Was all the fanta talking i guess.

Charter pilot called and said i could make the executive decision to fly 6:30 tonight but there is some pass we have to fly thru and other planes have been having weather issues going thru it plus its close to sunset.

I should have asked him the alternative if we could not get thru the pass, the flight back, where he would spend the night once we got to camp ect. But i told him i made an executive decision as 6:30 pm flight would mess with my sundowner time and we will fly tomorrow.

Am going over to gets drinks and with Jim (frostbit) and Joyce.

Biebs will have McKinley to himself for sundowners today.

Nice meeting up last night. Don't tell Wendell you had Joyce's biscuits, he'll be jealous. Looking forward to hearing about your hunt. Stay warm, shoot straight and remember. It's much easier to stay warm then get warm.

Its just weather. Heck, you could be hunting goat on the Cleveland Peninsula. You'd learn a lot about rain there. wave

That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

As the title of this thread states:

Well guys after reading some of the posts I see a few things.
One this is a one sided point of view. I will say a few things in here because Tom does not use any forums an has no idea these post even exists.
Reading between the lines the local Alaskans are trying to tell you the weather is crappie and it is not unusual for ALASKA.
If you are stranded for days in Anchorage with agents that fly 206’s, 185’ and Beavers are grounded I guess this is a good indication of the weather conditions.
For the newbies if you think you step off the bush plane and the game is at barrels length Alaska is not for you. This is not like hunting Africa or Texas.
We need to fly with a super cub to get into remote camps. With the weather conditions and high winds these planes cant fly and land safely unless you want to make your last landing.  Guys the client does not and will never make the decision to fly that’s the pilots call.
As for the TV program yes this was going on this season. It was from Chris Dorsey and Orion Production. Chris has hunted with Tom many times and has harvest Moose, Sheep and Griz. This is a program called “Build Alaska” and Tom was one of 8 build outs to be filmed. If you Google Chris you will find the hunts he has done with Tom.
Oh by the way Toms group has harvested 14 sheep and I believe 5 or 6 moose and 5 big caribou one of the moose was 74” so far this season with days to go on moose
As for the food issue if you get the real story yes the guides and packers and other camp workers were told to conserve on food and make sure the hunters eat first. I know I have cooked up there for 18 guys.
You see when you sit in a tent for days when you can’t get out and nothing to do YOU EAT and EAT. Well guess what high winds for days on end,  food can not be shipped in cause it comes in by plane. Stores are 180 miles away. So we need to conserve. Again you need to be there and experience these conditions.
I guess Brett and Frost Bite should be able to comment on there experiences.
For a last point Tom donates to good causes more hunts than any outfitter I know of. Also he is the only outfitter that I know of, that has offered return hunting trips at low or no costs to hunters that got stormed out.
Ask Biebs about a Moose hunt he went on a few years ago with a well know outfitter and was in the tent for 10 days. He was not offered a return trip  with any discounts other than another full boat trip. I would encourage guys that have been return hunters at Toms expense please post.
OH
I am ONE. This is not a bias report, just the other side. By the way as some of you know I set up hunts but let it be known I DON’T GET COMPENSATED IN ANY MANNER NO FREE HUNTS NO MONEY I PAY FULL BOAT JUST LIKE ALL OF YOU.

The hunt is still going on and I want to know will the story change if a big bull moose is harvested by the hunter. Its not over remember: till the fat lady sings!!!
I am ready for all the comments pro or con. None will offend me but let’s make comments that are of facts not hearsay.
Let’s not produce a bag of feathers to the wind.

Very well said Larry.
Weather is just one of those things to deal with. Lot's of people who have never hunted the North American north country just can't relate, people are spoiled by "just catch another flight or stop and get more food" thought process, most people don't really understand there are still wild places where man is at the whim of mother nature. For me that is part of the experience of Alaska.

I really know how frustrating it came be for the first timers. I was there years ago. Got caught up when Mount Redoubt exploded and then days of rain and flooding.
The main thing to remember is when flights are delayed it effects not only you it effects all the others that have bookings either before or after you. I guess scheduling in Alaska is a wish not reality . WOW HAVING FUN YET.

I get the weather. So does Mike. Your description of the food situation bears no resemblance to what Mike has told me. Finally , I can get a first timer not knowing what can happen. I most certainly know what can happen. Been there done that. However for Tom to tell a group of hunters that their hunt is not important enough to bother him as the Indonesian hunters trip was more important is really problematic . I can't understand that at all.

I am glad he got a moose. Whacking a moose does make make this guy a good outfitter. Not whacking one does not make him a bad outfitter.

I am very tempted to post all of the messages I received , including one from someone other than Mike.

I have no idea about any of the hunters you are talking about. Never would try to smear some one on second or third hand hear say information.
How would you like your reputation be born on what some one tells you and you have have no first hand position. If you feel it's proper to disparage some one on second hand info
I guess go ahead
But you where not there and neither was I.
So it is just a he said she said debate which accomplishes nothing except more fodder for bull
Thanks

Hi Larry,

Brett is out on a DIY with his wife and Father in Law.

I'm not in camp with Mike so I have no personal comment on conditions there. If Mike chooses to do so he could enlighten others on his return. I have gotten copied on an email where he outlined conditions and problems as he personally experienced them so as I said it's up to him to comment.

I have never been on a guided hunt in Alaska. I have certainly felt the bite (pun based on my logon name) of Alaskan weather more than once.

Mike's tale does not seem centered on weather or flying, more on camp conditions and mayhem related to reality TV shows. I doubt you want my honest opinion of that if I were a paying hunter.

For me personally a hunt is about the experience and that experience is not just a dead animal. I'm glad you mentioned Mike got a Moose. That's great. Perhaps his hunt report, should he decide to do one in detail, will tell everyone if that is all that mattered to him and if the rest of his time in camp was enjoyable and worth it, weather aside.

Cheers
Jim

All I can say is this
I was not there so to comment on what someone said is ridiculous.
I do know hunting Alaska I have 6 times
3 times successful it's not just a physical hunt it's very mentally taxing.
If you spend 5 or 6 days in a confined area with hunters that don't understand how the conditions reflect the hunting atmosphere things are said and that being said
I know all about the hunting and the thinking of just to be hunting is the main point and we stress that and the harvest is the bonus
A lot of guys say that thinking its cool but they will find something to moan about if they don't harvest an animal.
I have worked with hundreds of hunters and I can tell you they would rather go home with a trophy than an picture of a mountain.
Also this and most wilderness temporary camps are not 5 star most of the time you are in a tent eating Mountain House and peanut butter
But experience it for yourself before trying to pass judgment on something most people never have the opportunity to do.

Thanks
Larry

Running out of food, being stranded in camp, crappy weather . . . that all pales in comparison in my mind to being stuck in camp with Chris Dorsey! Yikes. Eeker

Kinda an oxymoron though- it's a given.

Got stuck in a tent waiting to get out of the bush for 3 days with an unknown at the time broken foot. (It is much nicer though to get stuck in town waiting for weather, so we won't count those times)

Lost 5 days (of 10) due to fog/rain in Kodiak- absolutely unhuntable. (while miked-up for a hunting show)

But I've also had 3 days of a BC moose hunt wasted due to high winds with clear blue skies.

Yeah food getting scarce is worrisome, but let's face it if you have the $$$ to pay for these hunts, more than likely losing a little weight won't hurt you any....and save yout time in the gym Wink

Could be worse- could be stuck at work.............

Oh, leaving tomorrow for a horseback hunt in the Wrangells..........

There are two types of people in the world: those that get things done and those who make excuses. There are no others.

All I can say is for having no idea what went on or any of the story, and for "not commenting"... You sure do comment a lot.
