Heading to Delta Junction tomorrow. Joyce is legal starting Saturday. Temps are dropping. Should be interesting.

Have gotten a lot of intel. I'll throw up an update when we get back.

She's using her Ruger Hawkeye African in 9.3 x 62.

Good luck Jim.
I have no doubt you and Joyce will enjoy the experience.
Delta Meats for process your buffalo and make sure you get a case or two of the pepper sticks.
If you get to wander too far and end up in Fairbanks, give me a call.

Thanks Mike,

Joyce would love to see your beautiful home for sure. Might not have a chance after her Bison hunt but we likely will go aurora hunting up the Dalton this winter as well and will pass through FBX then.

Cheers
Jim

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

We generally share most everything we hunt as do the households we mostly share with.

According to the AK F&G website a mature Bull may yield 680 pounds of net meat. That would be over 10 pounds of meat a week to eat for year. Eeker

Sharing rocks!!

Cheers

If all one ate for meat was Bison for a family of two that is 13 pounds a week 1.8 pounds per day or .62 pounds per meal.

Add two more people .31 pounds per meal or about 5ozs per person.

Have a family of 6 one bison is not enough.

If one had a tribal group of 40 would be just over 2 weeks with no waste no feeding dogs.

Yes for a modern family with a good freezer one bison represents a lot of meat.

If one has lots of friends you could be looking at running out shortly.

Interesting. In Colorado, we cannot share meat from wild game, unless that person has a like license.

Is that the same in Alaska, or can you share with anyone you want?

No way CO enforces that...an obscure law like that is there so you don't catch a guy with a freshly butchered elk or deer in their cooler saying he didn't kill it...some dude gave it to me....as an excuse for poaching.

If you have legally taken and processed game meat at home you can absolutely share it.

In Alaska we can legally give meat away.
There is form on the back page of the game law book that you just fill out and keep with the meat. You don't have to send it in or notify anyone, it's just a "note" that travels with the meat to state that the hunter was licensed to take the meat and you are lawfully transferring it. That form stays with the meat until it's processed. After that, eat it up.
Really though, I take meat and fish over to my neighbor all the time and he's an Alaska State Trooper, he hasn't arrested me yet. I might add, I don't give my hard won meat and fish to just anyone, he's a great neighbor.

You mean CO doesn't have something like this?

quote:
New Mexico Hunting Regulations

Possession, Donation or Sale of Game

It is unlawful to possess game without a properly notched carcass tag or evidence the game has been taken legally. Carcasses, meat and internal organs of game mammals and game birds may not be sold or bartered, but can be donated. However, the skins, head, antlers, horns and claws of legally taken protected species and the feathers of nonmigratory game birds may be sold, bartered or donated.

Any person giving items to another person must supply the recipient with a written description which states: the parts (skin, head, antlers, horns, claws, feathers, etc.) and/or the kind and number of game; the date when and county where game was taken; the conveyor’s name, address and hunting license number used to take the game; and the date and place of the transaction or donation.

Good luck to Joyce on her Bison Bull hunt. I volunteered for the Artic Warfare School at Fort Greely back in the 1970’s while in the Army, but we ran out of travel funds before I could go. Are you driving fron Anchorage or flying? That’s a pretty long drive, but it makes hauling all that meat back more econot.

When I was at Rich it was mandatory for all officers who were taking a company command to attend that school. What a blast. Two weeks of snowshoeing, skiing, building snow caves, learning how to assess avalanche dangers, etc, all taught by NCOs who took great pride in their knowledge of arctic fieldcraft.

And the little O Club they had was a real treat.

Any one that puts in for this Tag we recommend the “either sex” Tag. Still after a bull and could have dropped Bison the last two days easily.

Jim & Joyce,
These hunts are not near as easy/successful as they were 20 years ago. These herds have all been hunted and the bison are wise to our ways. When I got mine a few years back I heard the success rate was only 36% overall.
I know you two put the effort in, all that's needed is a bit of luck. I have confidence you guys are going to be eating buffalo steaks soon.

I think all the permits were “either sex” that year, thus the high percentage of success.

If you go back through the years and they list DI404 separately, that is either sex and DI403 is bull only. If Joyce had either sex we would be home by now.
