My daughter and I are relocating to Nome next month. I will be teaching at the elementary school. I was hoping to get some information from locals. Thank you! Only been there once for the end of the Iditarod. You won't get much sleep for that week or so. They blare the fire siren every time a musher is about to come in day or night. ______________________ DRSS ______________________ Hunt Reports 2015 His & Her Leopards with Derek Littleton of Luwire Safaris - http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/2971090112 2015 Trophy Bull Elephant with CMS http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/1651069012 DIY Brooks Range Sheep Hunt 2013 - http://forums.accuratereloadin...901038191#9901038191 Zambia June/July 2012 with Andrew Baldry - Royal Kafue http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/7971064771 Zambia Sept 2010- Muchinga Safaris http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/4211096141 Namibia Sept 2010 - ARUB Safaris http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/6781076141

No jobs are Barter Island or in Anaktuvik Pass? I guess Nome is probably a lot higher quality of life. Both Barter and Anatuvik have honey buckets. The were my favorite places when I worked for NSB. We had to arrest a kid on Barter, we landed and had him scooped in 20 minutes. Anatuvik was pretty much the same. Kaktovik and Wainright were good places to get shot in the back for wearing a blue uniform.

We’ve done AKP. They haven’t had honey buckets since the early 90s in most houses. But there are a dozen or so “cabins” in town that still use them. More when people’s pipes freeze. It was a great place in a lot of ways. My daughter is gifted and was the 4th highest reader in the school when she was 8 years old. And that was including the high school kids, including two kids whose parents were teachers. They pushed me to allow them to teach her in with the middle school and high school kids when she was in 4th grade. I wasn’t going to have her in there with kids who were talking/experiencing drugs, alcohol and everything else that teens are into. So we won’t be doing the village thing again. The schools are just too limited. And everywhere else on the Slope is too limited as far as hunting goes. I love caribou, but I need moose/mountain/fish, etc. I was offered two teaching positions in Fairbanks, one in Ketchikan and one in Nome. Nome feels like it has more of what we want/need, so that is where we are headed. I had been planning on Fairbanks for the past two years, but I never could warm to the place. I don’t know why... I am working on a 7 year plan to get back to Alaska. Somewhere with hot and cold running goats or sheep is preferred (Kodiak, Glennallen, Tok, Copper Center), but at this point I'd take Fairbanks or Anchorage. A buddy and his wife are in Delta Junction.

Concur on the villages sucking for kids, especially young girls. I have 3 of those still at home. Even Delta I think would be tough for girls.

I looked up Nome. Didn’t realize population was that small. Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum

Jason, Nome is uptown bush. You've got good fishing right there, close to good hunting, you have a pretty extensive road system and the beach goes on for miles offering an adventure all unto itself. Sadie was up there a couple of times and thought we could have lived there pretty easily if we had not been entrenched in Dillingham. Best of luck! Mark MARK H. Hey Mark, that is the best endorsement that I’ve heard yet. I trust Sadie’s taste, so if she thinks that it’s a good place, I’m sure that we will love it. For the past couple years, I had been planning on Renee and I moving to Fairbanks. I applied for a couple jobs in Fairbanks and while waiting to hear back from them I got antsy and applied with Ketchikan and Nome. I ended up being offered all four jobs. Deciding between the 3 places should have been difficult, but I realized that there is little chance that I would be happy living on a city on the road system, and I like moose and caribou a lot more than black tail and goats, so Nome was the only real choice. Now I’m just hoping that I fall in love with the place. I sick and tired of moving every few years. I am no Alaska expert but I spent about 12 summers in Dillingham working for Peter Pan seafood and a couple years on a fishing boat. The cool thing about Alaska is all the ways that it’s not like any place else. I will never forget the first time when I flew in to Anchorage I’d never been to Alaska before, always a dream and looking out the window at those mountains in glaciers for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles. If I could live in Nome or somewhere on the road system like Glenallen or Anchorage, Nome wins every time. Other wise you might as well live “down south” I always thought the DLG was the big city of Bristol Bay. I miss Alaska.
