If I was to visit Alaska in September, I'd have to mortgage the farm to rent a vehicle because of Covid and all the associated Shit ?

The big car/vehicle rental company's sold off their inventory to cut losses during the shut down and have not been able to replace it after. So the simple answer to your question is, Yup! That's if you can find something to rent!

Rent a pickup from Uhaul. Base price is cheaper than a rental car but mileage charge can be hefty.

I just got back from a 2 week trip. I rented a truck camper in Fairbanks on a 4X4 2018 F-350. Same price as the past 2 years. I think they recently raised prices about 10%. Check prices and reserve to lock in those prices, if you find them reasonable.

There's the private party car rental apps too.
We used truvio or something like that to rent a Toyota from some guy and it worked fine.
Sort of like Airbnb.
