One doesn't even have to be a guide to use a 9mm on bears.

But then the bear turned, looked up at Brenner and lunged, said Lewis, who interviewed the three men Saturday.

Brenner fired twice at the center of the hulking shape closing to four or five feet away. The sow, estimated at 400 to 450 pounds, went down. Brenner then put three more bullets into her head.

He used a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol. Lewis said such a low-caliber gun ordinarily doesn’t pack enough punch to kill a bear. But Brenner loaded the pistol with full-metal-jacket bullets that penetrated to the bear’s vital organs, he said

But you do need to be able to shoot well under pressure. I shoot way better with my rifle, even snap shooting, but having a pistol you're good with on you beats the hell out of looking for a stick!

I don't trust any bear - regardless of size or colour! Spring bear hunt only a month away. I can't legally tote a rifle pre-opening day, May 1st, when baiting, but I can a big axe!

It could be that she was habituated to men in a remote station. Maybe they were feeding her.

My lad Tom would often talk to the camp elephants and I am sure he could have fed them by hand.

I wish there were some of these bears left. Give me a reason to book a Kodiak brown bear hunt in Olga bay. It's on my bucket list. That's not a Daisy BB rifle either!

A polar bear charging in the snow on a sunny day would be a difficult shot. My go to gun would still be my 4570 double with iron sights.

Well if I ever have a spare $50K lying around so I can go after a white bear I will be taking my Win Mod 70 CRF version in .458 Win Mag. Don't need anything that big usually, but it does hit like a freight train and ends things quickly.

Our feeders are always down by the end of March. A habituated bear here is as good as dead.

We most certainly do. After 45 years of guiding for them, it is always nice to see them, just as we enjoy the moose and deer that wander through our place. What we don't enjoy most of the time is people, as they are the most likely to cause problems. Smiler

Pet bear on my deck eating out our bird feeder. One night I was looking through my telescope on the deck and I heard him coming up the stairs. He's not a real pretty black one, but he's pretty big for a Colorado bear. He's not standing, he's sitting on his haunches. Deck was falling apart so I had it replaced with steel and Trex, no stairs!
