I have great respect for bears. I've probably killed more of them than I should have (all legally). I would like to go on a spring bear hunt in the Olga Bay unit with Scott Mileur before I get too old. I won't shoot anything under 10' though, except with my iPhone. I guess the saying is, the only way to shoot a 10' bear is not to shoot anything smaller ...

Dang, this picture is all over the place. I just had a friend post this pic as a meme with the "This is a real man, not one who hunts them" or some such baloney.

Would love to know the context. One thing for certain, if this were a grizzly sow, the guy in the picture and the photographer would be in bad shape...

Thanks! I do enjoy reading them. I think i've killed my last bear unless I'm threatened or I can afford that once in a life time hunt on Kodiak Island and see a 10 footer. I really do enjoy reading them. Please keep posting them Smiler

Couple of comments. I feel real bad for the soldier's family and any other person mauled by a bear. Secondly, if a bear is eating your bird food leave it the f*** alone! After he's gone, move the bird feeder or get rid of it. We had a 300 lb black bear eating out of ours on our deck and we got rid of it. You start shouting at a bear eating your bird food and it comes after you, in my opinion, that's not a wise thing to do.

On another note, Happy Fourth to you all Smiler

Chuck

Very interesting....I knew nothing about them:

Because of the special nature of the Sirius Dog Sled Patrol operations, a wide range of unique equipment is required that is not normally used by the Danish armed forces.[3][12]

The weapons carried also reflect the harsh conditions. Among the equipment used by the Sirius Dog Sled Patrol is the M1917 Enfield bolt-action rifle chambered in .30-06 Springfield, known in Danish service as the Gevær M/53 (17), and the Glock 20 pistol chambered in 10mm Auto.[13]

The Sirius Dog Sled Patrol uses the standard .30-06 Springfield 168-grain (10.89 g) armor piercing, M2 military rifle round and also civilian hollow-points. The patrolmen feel that the M2 military round is best against aggressive polar bears at long range, but that the hollow-points are better against an enraged musk ox. Typically, the patrolmen arrange their stripper clips so every third round is a hollow-point.

The Sirius Dog Sled Patrol formerly used Pistol M/49 sidearms chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum, but they proved insufficient against the polar bears encountered.[14]

I've heard from a few Alaskan brown bear guides that they've gone to Glock 20s for sidearms. Good gun.

It takes a lot of exspearince to accurately judge the size of a bear.

I have heard my stories of bears getting smaller and smaller as the hunter walks up to a dead bear.

One of the most extreme ensamples I saw.

We used to register bears at the sheriff's dept. I worked for.

I was called up to the office to do so.

On the way inside I looked into the back of the pickup as saw a cub couldn't have been over 30lbs.

At the time a legal bear in Wis. had to be over 100lbs.

I talked to the hunter. A first time bear shooter.

He said he saw the cubs head pop over a log and he thought it was huge.

When he got up to it he saw it was tiny.

I called the local warden and let him handle it.

makes sense you carry a scale and weigh a bear to make sure it's 100 lbs. In Texas some counties a buck must have a 13 inch spread. A law that a fish has to be a certain length is something you can ascertain but 100 lbs or 13 inches????

From a practical stand point some laws don't make any sense

I spent some time reading about bear judging, also had killed 9 black bears over the years. That being said looking at bears with my guide through field glasses and a spotting scope over 5 days was the most valuable. In the end I spotted my bear across the lake, it was the biggest one I had seen so far, my guide took one look at him and said let's go get him. I had just come down with congestive heart failure so I was looking for a true wilderness experience that wouldn't kill me so I knew hte bears at Upper Togiak Lake weren't the monsters of Kodiak or Cold Bay. Just the same I shot him up close and personal (13 yards) and was thrilled with the hunt.

Chuck
