I headed up to unit 13 this weekend for a solo moose hunt. Saw several bulls around the 50"+ mark, but way too far for someone without an ATV. I ended up finding this guy on the Denali highway Saturday night. Shot him at 7pm and just finished skinning and quartering him by dark. All in all it was a lot of work, but a lot of fun!!! Brett, Congrats! Nice to be able to fill the freezer without worrying about points and width. That bull is plenty large enough for one guy to handle and all the meat you'll need. Mark MARK H. Nice job Brett!! The first one on the ground always looks bigger than you think when the work begins. Now you can bring a couple of steaks over with that scotch when I get back in October. We can "bore" each other with the details of your first Moose and my first Safari. BTW, Joyce did great with her new 7x57 when we hit the range in Birchwood. I thinks she's bonded with her new toy. She even did well off my sticks. I'll give you a holler when we are back. ______________________ DRSS ______________________ Hunt Reports 2015 His & Her Leopards with Derek Littleton of Luwire Safaris - http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/2971090112 2015 Trophy Bull Elephant with CMS http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/1651069012 DIY Brooks Range Sheep Hunt 2013 - http://forums.accuratereloadin...901038191#9901038191 Zambia June/July 2012 with Andrew Baldry - Royal Kafue http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/7971064771 Zambia Sept 2010- Muchinga Safaris http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/4211096141 Namibia Sept 2010 - ARUB Safaris http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/6781076141

How much boned out meat would you get from that animal? 660 lbs / 300 kg??? 3 years ago during my BC hunt, I saw Shiraz moose bull with reasonable palms. Your animal seems to have a bigger body. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

He is a small moose. He's only 1.5 years old. I would guess his live weight at 600-750lbs. In that unit you are required to leave the meat on the quarters and ribs when you remove it from the field. I took it to a processor and the ribs and quarters with bone in weighed 310lbs. I'd guess I'll get back 225lbs of meat. Wow! Exactly why I'd like to retire up there, one moose, half a dozen halibut, and add some salmon and a guy wouldn't need to visit the meat department of a grocery store for a whole year. 1.5 years old, he's aged perfect. Nice job.

Nicely done. I love to eat moose. Good to see a hunter who loves hunting enough to not have to shoot a monster or trophy to post the photo. Every game animal is a prize. I got skunked on my first moose hunt in Alaska with my brother. I need to get back up there to give it another go. Thanks for sharing.

Great job brett. Those spikeforks are way better eating than a big bull moose. Given my choice I will take a nice spike fork eveyr time. I got lucky this year and drew a knick river cow tag. I solo hunted a big cow so I feel your pain doing all the work cutting these big suckers up. way easier with friends.

Good deal Brett. Up here in Eagle, only been out 2 evenings; seeing several cows each time; watched a grizz splashing up and down in a creek last night. Watching cows in water at dusk. Bulls ain't running crazy everywhere yet, but anyday now. Our highway is closed (Taylor) and it sure is nice that no outside hunters can get in. I have like 20 miles of dirt road with waterholes alongside to myself and a few other locals. Usually 100-150 outside hunters camping at every pull off. I know they should have access too, but it is sure is quiet & different without any activity. I could learn to like this, ha. It's 4 am and getting coffee, and heading for the truck. The wife is going with me this morn. I'd luv to see her kill a moose. No caribou around Eagle for a month and a half though. Good luck to any other Ak hunters.
