AFTER A COUPLE OF PM'S I THOUGHT I WOULD POST THIS AT THE TOP. YOU MUST BE A U.S. CITIZEN IN ORDER TO HUNT IN ALASKA WITHOUT A GUIDE. THIS GOES FOR ALL BIG GAME ANIMALS. SILLY RULE, BUT IT'S THE LAW.

I just returned from one of the best hunts I've been on yet (see hunting report above). I went up there looking for an affordable moose option for our clients where they would have a good chance at shooting a big bull. After spending a total of 14 days in the area, I can tell you this area is absolutely phenomenal for moose hunting. With limited tags each year (24 per unit for the entire unit), high moose densities and a 4 brow tine minimum, this area is truly one of the better moose areas in the world. I got very lucky and called in a 62" moose at 9:30 on the first hunting day, but saw over 30 legal bulls (50"+ or 4 brow tines) over the next 13 days, and my hunting partner shot a 64" moose after passing a couple bulls hovering at 60" and one big bull on the first day of his hunt that was pushing 65" (photo of that bull below).

These hunts are based out of Galena, Alaska where the outfitter has a lodge and 4 planes (2 Beavers: 1 on floats and 1 on tundra tires and 2 cubs set up the same as the beavers) . Hunters need to fly into Galena where they are picked up by a rep from the company or the owner himself and driven to the lodge for "orientation". There you will buy your tag (license bought in advance) and be given a run down of what you need to know about the area. After this, you will be flown out to a remote camp anywhere from 100-140 miles from the nearest town. These camps are generally based on the river, so you will be also provided with a boat if the river is deep enough to float.

Each camp is WELL equipped with either a wall tent or the Cabelas "Outfitter" tents, 2 cots, one cooler full of home cooked vacuum sealed food (plus eggs, bacon, etc), one container full of snack food and canned food (Beef jerky, snickers, water flavor tabs, etc.), one container filled with all cooking supplies, 10 gallons of water, a propane stove and wood burning stove, a table and two chairs and 2 bottles of propane. In addition to that, you will be supplied with 2 pack frames and a ton of game bags for the moose quarters and other meat. It's a very, very will equipped camp with basically everything you need, just no guide. Items you will need to bring will come in a packing list upon booking the hunt, but include knives, a satellite phone (rented, for safety), and personal gear.

This area is a draw only hunt, but our outfitter has exclusive access to some of these areas for non residents, and the areas are over 100 miles from the closest town so resident pressure does not exist. Draw deadline is December 31, 2011 with results available in March 2012. His hunters run about 90% success on the draw due to him having access to 3 separate units, and guys who do not draw get their deposit rolled over to the following year. This year we had 5 of our clients put in for the draw and all 5 drew.

After my hunt up there, we purchased all of his guided and "outfitted" hunts for 2012 and 2013. All of the guided hunts are sold for 2012, and we have 3 non guided hunts left for 2012. We still have 3 guided and 6 non-guided available for the 2013 season.

You will need to book in groups of 2, but if you are alone we have a client who booked a single hunt so he will need a partner. He's a 35 year old ex-Army ranger, a hard hunter and a hell of a good guy.

Pricing is as follows:

Outfitted Moose Hunts: $6,750 (3 remaining for 2012, groups of 2 in camp. One guy booked alone looking for a partner)
- 10 full hunting days, 12 day itinerary
- Units 21, 23, 24
- Animals: Moose, caribou, wolf, black bear
- Includes: meals, tents, all game bags and pack frames, air charters into and out of the hunting area, flying of meat back to Galena
- Excludes: Guides, field prep, license and tags, shipping of meat and trophies

2011 non-resident license tags were as follows (no chance expected for 2012):

$85 - Hunting license (non-resident. Please inquire for non-US citizen rates)
$400 - Moose
$225 - Black Bear
$325 - Caribou
$30 - Wolf

Please let me know if you have any further questions at this time. Below are some photos from my September 2011 non-guided hunt

Just to be clear, this offer is for an unguided hunt in 2012. Correct?

Correct, no guide on this hunt, but includes all charter flights to and from the field, flights needed for removal of meat and trophy from the field, a very well equipped camp (for complete list of items outfitted for this hunt, please email me) and an excellent adventure!

Larry,

We do offer it as a guided hunt, but pending receipt of funds we are sold out for 2012. The cost for the guided 1x1 hunt is $16,500, and you're allowed to shoot grizzly bear for a $5,000 trophy fee. Should you shoot the bear first, you do not have to pay the trophy fee until you shoot the moose.

Let me know if you have any further questions, I'd gladly send you some information on it.

Thanks!

Greg

Greg,

I do miss that moose hunting. Good opportunity for someone adventurous. You hit the weather and the rut perfect from what I can see.

For sure Mark, it was hot a few of the days but early frosts kept the bugs to a minimum and the rut was in full swing starting about September 12 (even though I called my bull in on the 9th). Even on the warm days it was cool in the mornings so the days were very consistent as far as the hunting went. The temperatures stayed pretty much around their monthly averages with a few warm exceptions, which allowed the moose to do their thing.
