Hi Andrew
Thanks for kind words and the invite.
Well done on what you have done with Royal Kafue.

I have a good friend up in the North on the Tanganyika shore line, Brett Hoy, we had grand plans to rehab an abandoned reserve that bordered his piece of land up there, what a beautiful place.
It may yet happen, he was still guiding here in SA last I hear from him but was prepping his landy to start his trek up north.

Anyway, I will be sure to make you a stop on the way past when I go and see Brett.

All the best
Ian

Here is another offer for Carolinasman.
Cheers, all, and thanks Bossie.

Posted 07 December 2012 13:28
Hi Cal

It’s unfortunate that we have to meet this way, I have been reading down the AR posts to see what other outfitter in Africa are up to and came across the bad new and trouble of Carolinasman.

I can’t offer a full Safari for free, as I also use concessions and other landowners camp, but I would like to be of assistance to the man.

I will be posting regularly on the AR forum, and since this is a direct conversation between me and the hunters with no booking agents in between I would like to contribute the 15% Agent commission on Accommodation fees that I would have paid in any way to Carolinasman for each hunt I sell through the AR forum.

I hope the funds can be of some assistance to him and his family, and we pray that he will recover soon.

If you think that I can be of any assistance to help Carolinasman please feel free to contact me at lbgsafaris@yahoo.com we can the sort all the detail out

Kind Regards Bossie Mostert

It's a shame how short sighted some can be. Bushleague Safaris has ruined his reputation here on AR over a trivial amount of money. Yes, business is business but if there was ever a case of being pound wise and penny foolish, this is it. Not to mention, heartless! Of course, we can't run our businesses on emotion but from a strictly business standpoint, you do realize that refunding this man's deposit under the circumstances that required him to cancel, would have bought you enough good will to have recouped your money, 100 times over, right?

And then this dia69 guy! Really fella. You equate a man being diagnosed with terminal cancer and canceling his trip to undergo and pay for treatment the same as someone who refuses to take responsibility for his actions?! So developing cancer is "no difference" in your words, than bailing out people who refuse to work or acquire the skills needed to work. And BTW, nice choice of words in this case as referring to refusing to work as being "a cancer" since Carolinasman actually does have cancer. Nice guy you are! NOT!!

I don't know where everything stands from a financial standpoint on getting Carolinasman reimbursed for his deposit. But let me know to whom I need to send it and I'll pitch in $100 myself.

Todd

Ian:

You are a good person to make the offer you did.

Are you going to be at SCI this year? If so, I'd like to discuss a hunt with you.

Thanks, you are the type of Outfitter I want to do business with.

Interesting--some hunt interest is developing for Ian. Why no interest in hunting with Bushwack?
Just wondering, that's all.
Cal
PS. Another PM arrived today with the offer of a donation. I PM'd Carolinasman to open communication with him.

Someone once said, "There are people in this world whose sole purpose is to serve as a warning to others". The owner/operator of Bushwhack Safaris has certainly shown himself to be part of that group! You can hold on to $2000 as tight as you want but, when you cling to that sum, $10000 or more just went out the door. Just plain stupid. You know, even if right now he came here and offered a refund I would think more of him. It would take guts to do the right thing....especially after getting beaten up so bad on these threads.

All,

Apologies for my absence, I thought the thread had gone quiet. Thank you Cal for the PM. I can hopefully clear up a few things that seem to be unclear on this thread.

I contacted Bushwhack two days after I was diagnosed, slightly more than a week before I was to go on the hunt, three weeks after I sent my deposit. This hunt was put together pretty quickly as I was going to be in SA on a business trip and hoped to try and hunt while I was there. In hindsight, not the best way to go... At any rate, when I was forced to cancel my hunt, I wasn't optimistic about my survival, or my ability anytime in the near future to go to SA and hunt.

I asked Bushwhack if there was any chance of getting a partial refund on my deposit, I understood he may have incurred expenses and was more than happy to pay for these. He stated a contract is a contract, legal and binding and I signed it. I fully agreed. He then stated he would transfer the hunt if I could sell it and recommended this forum and one other to post the hunt. That is pretty much it.

Just to be clear, I am not destitute, I have insurance and am doing ok financially. I'm not looking for charity, never have been one to have my hand out and never will be. Like everyone I do have expenses (daughter in college, plenty of medical bills, etc) but I'm doing ok and was merely looking not to simply disregard the deposit amount.

I have truly been amazed at the generosity by those on this site, you have restored some of the faith I may have lost in my fellow man.

Thank you to all that have positively contributed on this thread, you are sincerely a fine group of men.

Right now I have a singular focus, to beat this cancer. To those that have written / PM'd I will do my best to keep you posted on my condition.

Best regards,

John

Hi Carolinasman

I trust that you are doing better. You are in our prayers and we think of you every day. With all the prayers that have gone up I know that the Lord has sent his Grace back to you.

Once you have recovered you should come and visit us here in Limpopo so that we can unleash the hounds on a sounder of Bushpigs. We might even get an opportunity at a Bushbuck or two.

Get well soon Bossie, May - Henriette and DJ Mostert

I also understand Carolinasman not taking the hunt at a later date due to his medical condition and the possible outcome. That said, I personally would put the spirit of the law ahead of the law's letters and refunded the gent's money even if it caused a loss on my part. And others here, too, would do the same as evidenced by the generous offers made.

All the words have been said that need to be said so let's get down to business.

Below is a post from a gent in SA. All read it, and Carolinasman read it too, as when you are up and about (keep positive) we can make a hunt work for you.

Hi Cal

I like your idea to buy the hunt for Carolinasman.
I would like to offer my services here as I think it is a worthy cause.
If you are interested then perhaps you could administer the funds etc and make this happen.
I would like to keep this going each year, so try and figure out a way to do it annually.

I have dates open in January and February if he wants to move on this now. If he has a wish list let me know what it is and we can switch things up to make it happen.

What I can offer is as follows.

7 Hunting Days in KZN

1) No day rate on the hunt
2) 2 days Bushpig over hounds at no charge
3) Caracal over hounds at no charge
4) Common Reedbuck trophy ram at no charge
5) Blesbuck Ram at no charge

If you can pull together about USD 3000
we can add the following at cost without day rate.

1) Nyala Bull
2) Impala Ram
3) Warthog
4) Bushbuck
5) 1 day of wing shooting

I will collect Carolinasman from Durban airport, he must just get there the rest is taken care of.

This is a suggested hunt programme and he can change things up while here and also adjust the safari to his health needs etc.

If you want to get the trophies mounted then we can get an estimate from a taxidermist that can handle all the formalities etc.

Let me know your thoughts and lets make this happen.
Also please feel free to make comments or advise etc.
I have ensured that all hunting destinations are within 90 minutes of easy driving from the best hospitals in the province so should the person take a turn for the worse he would be within easy reach of good medical.
I would like to suggest that the funds gathered buy him a global rescue membership too so we have access to air lift

Kind regards
Ian

So fellas, what do you think? let's hear from Carolinasman first. When he is up and able, let's pool the funds for the major trophy fees as the day rate for the entire hunt was well as the minor critters have been covered. Ian Blakeway will take care of Carolinasman on his end and we an administer the funds on this end to give the gent a hand.

carolinasman--please reply to this forum or send me an email at pappas@mtaonline.net and we will work to make this happen. Again, keep positive thoughts. I know it may be difficult but every oncologist will state many terminal issues turn out not to be that. Let's focus on your recovery and WHEN you are able, go for the hunt and then vacation up here in Alaska for some fishing or caribou hunting, I will be your host, and join my mates and myself for an afternoon's shoot with some fine double rifles.

Ian, you are a true gentleman to step up to the plate with your offer. You will be known and remembered well on this forum.

So, fellas, what say you all? Can we make this thing work?
Cheers to you gents, you are the best AR has to offer.
Cal

Cal- I am in! If this comes to pass I'd be glad to contribute.

WHEN Carolinaman beats cancer and goes to hunt with Ian, he will need an airplane ticket. I see where his Bushwhack deposit is covered so I think we need to cover his airplane ticket too.

I'm in for $300 when that day comes.

I could not agree more. It goes way beyond all the pissing at each other over issues that, by comparison, are not that important. Lots of good here. I noticed Bushwack didn't even offer a kind message to John.

I see that sadly John has passed away. Condolences to his friends and family. I hope he gets to go on his safari in the next life.

The reason I am posting this here is (i) to remind anyone considering booking with Bushwhack Safaris or Patrick Reynecke to run as fast as you can in the other direction, and (ii) so that some of those that posted on this thread might have a chance to reconsider and reflect on some of their comments (e.g., Code4 questioning whether anyone should help John out since he might be feigning a terminal illness). As someone said above, this thread certainly brought out the best and worst in people . . . hopefully those that it brought out the worst in will be able to learn something.

RIP John.

RIP John.

I'm sorry to hear. I wish they would find a damn cure for cancer. We lose way too many to that awful disease.

Thanks, Mike.
When I got the news I wondered if Bushwhack would post condolences here, to John's family, etc. He is silent on the matter and now there is absolutely no question where his heart is. I hope Bushwhack or his loved ones don't come down with the same affliction. But I also hope he stops posting here trying to drum up business and the fine folks here will not forget his heartless and soulless manner.
Cal
PS. Patrick: I trust you are enjoying counting your money.

I see a lot more of the good here on AR than I do the bad.

God speed John.
