I have been asked about this sport, and have no idea what I should tell the gentleman.

Anyone has any ideas?

I know that there are offers for knife and/or spear hunts for pigs using dogs in North and South America.

I used to guide wild boar hunts in the east TN mountains and sometimes we used knives, but you need hounds to bay and catch dogs to pin the hog down. Then you go in and grab them by the hinds legs and hold them so the hunter can use the long knife. You will hear it from the pig...trust me. I would ask Juan Pozzi, he offers this hunt currently.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Saeed:

We catch them with dogs. Someone grabs the hog by the back legs. The hog is then either released or stuck with a knife or a spear. It is very exciting and often strenuous.

While we do it for fun (not commercially) many places do it for profit.

Not anything like running Warties on the Athi Plains on horseback, but there are plenty of folks who hunt feral hogs in East Texas with dogs and then stick them with a knife, if that's of interest. Never done it. Never intend to, but I know its done. Sorry I don't have references.

This type of hunt have been existing for a long time, of course, quite before the British come to India this hunt was already existing.
This is something common in Spain, they pursue and kill the boar just with the spear and the horse. Now a days, we are having some trouble with ecopeople (they think they know about ecology, animals, etc) and politics are thinking in banning this kind of hunts, but you still can do it in the south of Andalucia without problems.
I have heard that is also possible to be done in Argentina.

Best regards

I have a friend that I hunted with in South Spain that does these hunts. He showed me his pig sticking knives and they are awsome. He is a black belt in martial arts and an olimpic pistol competitor so it doesn't surprise me that he could dispatch the biggest boar.

They do this in South Texas with dogs. Dogs bay up the boars and hunter gets in there and stabs the pig. I sent my Dad and his buddy on one of these hunts and he said it was worth the 1 time, but wouldn't do it again. Its pretty brutal.

I have seen what has happened to dogs that were a bit slower than the hog. Personally I think I will stay further back and use a handgun or rifle.

There are guys here in TX who do it. Quite a few actually. I went along on one, as an observer.

Not my cup of tea. I love dogs too much to see one get hurt, and they do occasionally. It's a brutal experience.

Some love it, some don't care for it. Do it if you like, I prefer to shoot them Big Grin

I agree with Spanish hunter. The only think that the british invented was the name "pigsticking". It was done under different names before the empire both in India and the rest of the world.

There are many alive today who have taken part in pigsticking championships as the last Khadir cup championship took place in 1985.

A british officer is currently trying to set up a pig sticking service in Argentina. I will try to update you on where its going.

To our members from USA, pigsticking is different to spearing from horseback wih dogs since without dogs, the boar keeps running and it takes excellent riding skills to overtake the boar and also to save the belly of the horse from the tusks. Also, spearing on a full gallop is also an art.
A ombination of riding lessons and tent pegging is good practice for pigsticking. Please google tent pegging for more info.

Most of the outfitters in Hawiian Islands offer these hunts....Big Island and Maui. They use dogs to pin them down and the hunter goes in as described above. I have done it years ago...carried a 44 Mag for the hunt....guide would NOT let me shoot!! It all worked out!!

My dad has a friend who was a federal trapper and lived in East Texas who loved the sport. He would visit dad and regale him with stories and pictures of hogs taken with his dogs and a butcher knife.

He got older and his wife and family forbade him to hunt hogs again without a firearm so he took his 30-30 and bayed a large boar. He had a clear shot til a hound jumped into the fray and the round passed thru the hog and shot off the foot of the hound. As usual, it was his best hound, we all know the sorry dogs never have anything happen to them and die of old age.

Anyway, as a compromise he started carrying a 22 magnum revolver to keep the peace at home, but still uses the butcher knife.

What does this have to do with Saeed's query? Nothing, but its a good story.

Eterry

Good luck and good shooting.
