In 3 trips to Africa I have yet to have my ammo looked at, counted, weighed or checked for Caliber. I pack it in a TSA Locked Plastic MTM Box and put that in my checked luggage. I tell the Ticket agent that the bag has ammo in it in a locked case in factory Box's and weighs less than 8 lbs. Have any of you ever had your ammo weighed or counted? If so, does the ammo box count in the weight or just the Ammo in the factory box's?

muygrandePretty sure the box does not count. I will find out soon as my ammo alone weighs 11 lbs and the case is a pelican double pistol case which probably weighs a couple of pounds with the TSA locks and all.

muygrandeWell, as noted all over this site and others THEY can do what they want to do and will. However, most of the quoted regulations I have seen here and elsewhere refer to ammunition weight and have nowhere seen weight of the required case included in that definition.
Suppose if they do weigh mine they will either confiscate all the ammunition or let me leave behind enough to make the overall weight limit.
LRH did they weigh yours our confirm the NUMBER of cartridges you were bringing in to that shown on your paperwork?

LRH270They just counted it to make sure it matched the number on the form.
It shouldn't have been a surprise, but she counted 75 shotgun shells individually rather than multiply 3 boxes times 25......

I sure hope you didn't suggest using advanced math like that, they would have lost count and had to start again.

N E 450 No2Three trips to Zim through SA and my ammo was never looked at or asked about.
Except when I had 2 drillings they guy at SAPS did ask what kind if ammo it shoots, I replied shotgun and rifle, it has both barrels. He said OK.
I also had a handgun all 3 times.

Michael RobinsonI've had my ammo inspected more times than I can remember, both going and coming back.
They've never weighed it though.
They almost always ask about the weight, and I always reply that it's under the 5 kg. limit.
So far, that's been enough.

D. NelsonI had mine weighed by British Airways upon check-in at LAX. They did not count the weight of the locked box I had it in.
They didn't seem to know what they were supposed to be doing or what they should be checking re: firearms/ammo. I think because I told them that I had less than 11 lbs of ammo, that prompted the weight check.
That is the only time in 8 safaris that I have had it weighed. I have had them count the rounds prior to departing on a charter flight out of Harare though.

RVL IIIHad mine weighed in 2006 at IAH (Houston Bush) after I told them it was below the limit. Big pain....took several phone calls, supervisors etc..That was on Lufthansa.

LionHunterI've had mine inspected by TSA going and counted and headstamps checked when transiting RSA. Also had a guy take me out of line at Harare and check one bag looking for ammo after I told him I had none - it was in the other bag. When asked how much I have I always reply "Less than 5kg" and that seems to keep them happy most of the time.

jetdrvrI had mine weighed in Orlando by Northworst when transiting to Tanzania in 06. I had the ammo in a lockable pistol case, but they made me take all the boxes out and put them on the scale. That's the only time in six or seven international hunts I've ever had it happen.

Larry SellersMy ammo including the box and locks will weigh under 11 lbs, Sooooooo they should figure that the ammo part must be less than the limit??? I have never had any ammo counted or weighed. Have been asked about numbers and responded with the same as on the paperwork, no problem.

SGraves155To ease my mind, I keep a small electric digital scale in the ammo box (smaller than a pack of cigarettes). Of course, some (most?) of those morons would never be able to figure out that 100 rounds of 375 at 45 grams/cartridge weighs 4.5kg.
