Is it necessary to file submitt a SAPS form if you are only transiting through Johannesburg enroute to Harare. And doing the same when returning from Harare to the U>S>

Thanks

If you are recovering your checked luggage in South Africa you will have to have a SAPS transit permit. If you are checked through to Zim you will not need a SAPS form. You will need your Zim Permit filled out (4 copies). I always have a filled out SAPS permit just in case I have to stay in SA. Afton Guest House web site will provide you with a way to have a pre-issued SAPS permit money well spent .

Just went through to Lusaka last month. No SAPS required if you remain "in transit" and your bags are checked on to your final destination outside RSA.

If you are overnighting in RSA and actually collecting your bags and entering the country, then you would need the permit.

+1 for the above. If you remain in transit and your luggage is checked through direct to Harare you do not need an SAPS form.

Overnighting in SA: fill out the silly thing and have it handy. Remember to take 3 sheets of carbon paper along. The single page import permit for your rifle in to Zimbabwe needs to be filled out 4 times. Your invitation letter is a must and have it handy when you touch down at the airport. Visa is US$ 55-00 payable on arrival. Carry a number of 1's and 5's because all staff never seem to have change handy.

I believe the visa fee for U.S. citizens entering into Zim is $30.00 for a single entry and $45.00 for a double entry. If you are going during your stay in Zim to somewhere else like Chobe for a day visit I would get the double entry visa. Saves you $15.00 if you go out of the country and re-enter. This was the deal in June when I was in Zim. Again in June when going into Vic Falls if you wanted to get a double entry visa you went into the far left lane. If not either the middle or the far left lane. Hope this helps. For sure have four copies of Zim gun permits filled out prior to landing.
