Hey guys...
I see huge hikes in airfare on Atlanta to JoBerg this year. Traditionally the direct flight from Atl was maybe 2k ($1,800'ish mostly) and now jumped to $3k++ ??
The other itineraries I'm seeing are all nasty timelines or price.
This is the first year I've seen this?
Wait and watch? What are you all seeing?

Got tickets in August this year DFW to JNB for $1168 via ATL. Up until a few weeks ago that price was still available.

Same dates for just the ATL - JNB route for $1600.

Thanks...I'm looking in July (and I'm going in Late August too) and I'm seeing crazy fares in July

I guess Larry! Lol. I had a bit of sticker shock. Looks like if I move by a week or so, the price per ticket for my wife and I drops back down to say $2,060 I think. I must have hit just a perfect time to see some of these fares.

I can get the $2K price on Delta for July. Try using Google Flights for searching tickets and dates.

My second wife's cousin's best friend used to work in the National Association of Airlines Irritation Department as an assistant to the Director of Visionary Pricing.

She, before his sex change, now he, in strictest confidence, told me that there really was a reason why you could price a flight each day of the week (for the same flight dates) and it always changed, both up and down.

Seems that there is a large chicken that lives in Atlanta and the high priestess of pricing (Warren Harding's grandchild, leftover from the FDR administration, I think), each morning, throws worm heads on a large grid and when the chicken strikes the grid, well-paid representatives of all the major airlines, using a device like the Ultra machine of WWII, spin some wheels, type some letters and out come the day's prices.

Makes sense to me.

By the way, the passengers eat the leftover worm bodies ground up in their complimentary cookies. Part of Michelle's school lunch program or something?

On the ATL-JNB topic, I just priced that trip (including origination in Jacksonville) August 28-September 10. Delta Comfort for $1995.
Didn't take it. Bought a ticket to JFK with money, used miles for Business on Air France JFK to JNB (180,000 miles this time, was 230,000 last time on Virgin) using Delta Miles from my American Express card. I just buy a money ticket from Jacksonville to JFK, return and skip ATL entirely. I"ve done this the last 4 trips and although it takes 15 hours longer, I don't mind spending a day in Paris wandering around. A train will take you into Paris right from the terminal. Delta routes the baggage/guns right through from JAX to JNB so no hassles in either New York or Paris.

If I hadn't bought the ticket separately to JFK or had originated in JAX or ATL, the Frequent Flyer ticket would have been 750,000 miles. I paid $250 for the ticket JAX return JFK and "saved" almost 500,000 miles (and get to eat some frogs and snails in Gay Paris.)

It actually seems to help with the jet lag and I like arriving in JNB early in the a.m. so I can catch flights to Zim and not have to R.O.N. in Johannesburg. Having to spend the night in JNB makes the trip about the same duration, anyway, come to think of it.

JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

Not sure when you're flying in July but I dropped Delta and have flown Qatar Air six times out of Atlanta. I simply will not fly any other airline to Africa as long as Qatar is in operation.

Checking current rates, round trip from Atlanta to Doha to Johannesburg is 31 hours going to JNB and 35 hours returning and costs $1,600.00.

Within 7 days of your trip you will generally be offered a promotional upgrade to business class. It's somewhere between $400 to $600 to Doha and $300 to $400 from Doha to Africa. So I can generally fly business class round trip for $3,500 depending on time of year - but a bargain when it comes to flying up front. Delta is generally about $12,000 for business class.

I used to fly up front on Delta using miles, but when they changed the frequent flyer program, a business class ticket jumped from a reasonable 180,000 miles to over 700,000. That's when I destroyed my Delta AmEx card and started flying Qatar. Will never step foot on another Delta aircraft to Africa.

Just booked O'Hare to Joberg for last half of August on Lufthansa. Taking whole family so cost was a concern. Have an 8 hr layover going and 2 hour on the return for $813.00 per ticket.

That is a bargain of note. Viva competition.

It's $2,400 out of ATL to JNB on Lufthansa.

Pricing from ATL is tough. Lack of competition.

My buddy flies from SFO. We often leave on the same day headed to the same destination. From the left coast he's paying $4k for biz class while I'm paying $6k or $7k.

Kills my soul. I've even thought of flying to the west coast on miles, claiming my bags and overnighting at his house, then starting from SFO with him the following morning.

You guys who book separate tickets should be aware that unless you link your tickets, the airline is not obligated to deliver your bags to JNB - only the destination on your ticket.

Yes, good point. No offense to any who do but I’m somewhat amazed by how many people take say 35-40hr itineraries. I did get a notification of a price change. It came down just a bit to like 2,400 which is not horrible. This was from the same itinerary with the best return that was showing over 6k! Economy! If I accepted a 7 hr layover in ATL it was over 3k

To me...time is valuable and I like to max my hunting time the best I can..
When I am closer to retirement...I’ll do the Europe layovers or multi day deals

Fares should be coming down, all the major airlines are talking about a price war.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - United Continental Holdings Inc shares fell more than 6 percent in after-hours trading on Tuesday as the airline said it plans to increase capacity, likely threatening its profit margin as it is locked in a price war with low-cost carriers.

"The best way to compete with low-cost carriers is to match their prices," one of its executives said on an earnings call with analysts and investors. "We can't let low-cost carriers have price advantages in our hubs."

The warning spooked investors, who are keeping a close eye on United's bottom line as the company tries to prevail in a fierce fare war that has sent some ticket prices tumbling. Shares of Delta Air Lines Inc and American Airlines Group Inc also fell more than 5 percent after hours.

Worth noting, Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals are available from the airlines too. They go fast, but if you know your dates and you're within 330 days of departure, you can get a deal. We price checked our Uganda tickets on Cyber Monday. Imagine our surprise when the biz class ticket that was $7200 a few days prior was on sale for $4200.

Sir: I heard almost the same procedure. My friend is a double platinum, inner circle, SCI Mason who told me the high priestess sacrifice a large chicken daily. She stands over a board with various letters, colors, and numbers holding the chicken in one hand and Celtic sacrificing knife in the other. She cuts the chicken’s head off, and lets the body fall on the board. The body then runs and flops around until finally coming to rest on a location on the Board. Clergy from the TSA interpret the corpses gyrations and spot it comes to rest to Devine what the price for the day should be.

The heads then become the cookies. I think we should empanel a Special Counsel to determine if anyone is being refused a seat in the temple because of reglion.
