Mike SmithWhere is the material from that first piece from? It looks like the stuff from Ohio after heat treating. How about a little discussion/education on the heat treating process? I have seen the results but really know nothing of the process. Great work btw. Very nice stuff. You downplay your skills my friend.

That piece is Brazilian Agate. It has been heat treated but there are many ways to heat lithic material. Using a Kiln is the #1 way, but many other sources can be used; traditional fire (spalls are buried in sand and a hardwood fire is kept going for 24 hours, then allow to cool 24 hours before digging up. Takes a lot of skill. Roasting ovens are another way to heat but you can't get beyond 450-500 degrees and some material must go as high as 900 degrees for extended lengths of time. YouTube has many video's on heat treating flint/chert, etc. Great source of information.

L. David KeithJade is not a good knapping material. It is normally carved. Ancient's worked it in several ways but I have never seen any items that were knapped, and I've seen many relics made by native cultures from Mexico, Central and South America and Asia. A dremel tool would probably be your best bet.
