rnbSecond caliber for single shot rifle
Bailey has almost completed a side lever break open take-down single shot rifle in 7x65r for me he has stated he could add a second barrel to the set, what would be the idea second caliber to add. It must be rimmed. Thanks RNB

tiggertateHis rifles are slim and trim so I'd go smaller and not larger were it mine. Anything from 220 Swift to 22 Hornet for starters.

460 wby shooter9.3x74r or 7.62x54r might be nice

JDA-COI like what 460 said - Going all metric would be pretty cool!

Remington40x.375 Flanged NE.

Alberta CanuckI'd go with 8x56R (.329" bullets, 200 gr. SN ammo now made boxer-primed in the U.S. by Hornady...on sale for $28 per box at sportsman's Guide right now).
My second choice would be 7.62x 54R.
My third choice would be 9x57R.
Fourth (but still close enough that tomorrow it could be first choice), would be 8x57R....especially as I already have a 9.5x57R. (AKA .375 NE 2-1/2" R)
28 January 2012, 01:59
460 wby shooterI was thinking that the 7.62x54r would be really cheap to shoot, cheap ammo and cheap brass = lots of fun and practice

RamsgateI hate to reveal how smart I am, but here, modestly and humbly, is the perfect answer ...
what you want is a .400 H&H Flanged
for sure
the only disadvantage is that the cartridge may not exist and you would have to form the brass from .375 Flanged
don't thank me

dwheelsHow about a .225 Winchester?

Heym SR20Given that the 7x65r is pretty good all rounder on most deer and antelope, suggest two further barrels - one in 22 hornet as a light rifle for vermin and plinking / or light rifle in 6x70r for small game. Then add either a 9.3x74r or a450/400 for big stuff. The 9.3 should fit into the same action as the 7x65r.
30 January 2012, 02:51
rnbI am probably go the two barrel route 375 H&H flanged or 9.3x74r and some 22 center fire rimmed caliber that should cover anything. RNB

GrenadierUnless you want to have a rifle with an action larger than appropriate for 7x65R you should stay with another cartridge of similar case diameter.
The immediate choice that comes to mind is the 9.3x74R. Another very good choice would be .375H&H Flanged Magnum. The .405 Winchester also has a similar case diameter and would make a fun, light, big-bore single shot rifle.
There are many wildcats you could go with as well. Two of the best would be the 338-74 Keith, based on the 9.3x74R case, and the 416JDJ, based on the .444 Marlin case.
My vote is for the .405 Win with a throat long enough to shoot 400gr bullets.
I would be careful about going with any .22 centerfire that didn't use a large rifle primer, i.e. the same primer used in 7x65R and the other cartridges above.

Claret_DabblerI would go with a rimmed 22CF, a Hornet if you just want an easy to shoot miild round, or a 5.6x50R if you want something exotic.
Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

UkkoMy opinion is some really small caliber or biggest what you can think you can handle of it. Any about .30cal caliber is too close of that 7x65r what you all ready get. I dont see any reason why need be 2 different all most equal caliber. So i recommed also 22 hornet or 6x70R and bigger is difficult but anyway some 9,3x74R or bigger if you think its still ok to shoot for you. I believe gun will be really nice light gun and that why bigger will be interested to use.

eskimo366.5x52R or as we know it 25-35 WCF.
"One shot is usually enough..."
Well after much thought I am going with 9.5x74r its 375 caliber makes it legal for anything in world and talking with Dave who invented this caliber he has shot almost everthing hunting with it and its easy to make and the bullets are easy to find Dave states that he shoot Speer 270gr at 2600 FPS and it works on everthing

jeffeosso7x65R .. well, what else would you need?

30-30? 356 winchester?
any number of others out there...
I'd likely think 22 HP

MacD37The natural is a 9.3X74R with the action size of the rifle he makes in 7X65R. perfect pair!

N E 450 No2I too think the 9,3x74R would be the way to go.
If you wanted to go smaller for varmints then the 225 Winchester would be a good choice, IF you can still get cases.
Edited;
Midway USA has 225 cases.

Die Ou JagterI like the 9.3X74R (have a few) but come and join a very select few 395/400.

Art S.They don't make a much better small cartridge for a single shot than the 222Rimmed.

Bingo! We have a winner (or at least my vote too). If you needed a metric name cartridge I'd use a 5.56R or something catchy.

I like the idea of a smaller caliber but I want to take this to Africa so a 22 caliber center fire wouldn't do me much good, that why I have received a set of custom dies already and a reamer is being build in 9.5x74r (375x74r) which will be very close to the 375 flanged I have been told that it will shoot Speer 270 gr bullet at 2600 fps with 75gr of 414 by the die maker RNB
13 April 2012, 02:07
boom stickFrom what I know the 9,3x74 was made by necking down from 375. You just remade the 38-90 by necking up the 9,3x74
http://www.gunauction.com/sear...cfm?itemnum=10901457I want to thank everyone for there input on the second barrel of this take down rifle after reading what everyone had to say I not only added a second caliber but to make it an all round go any where rifle I was forced to add a third barrel caliber thus here is where I ended up with small caliber Winchester 225, medium caliber and all around caliber for Kansas deer 7x65r, and to hunt anything else in the world a 9.5x74r(375x74r 270 gr at 2600) again thanks for your input.RNB

RNB,
Seems as though you answered your question re. Africa. I did not see the African requirement in the original posting. As others have mentioned, a metric cartridge would be appropriate and do what I (we) think you want.
In the future, please, do not post any references or pictures of rifles you have commissioned by Bailey Bradshaw, it is not nice to tease those of us still in cages.
Thanks and luck,
Stephen

Big RedheadI suggest 22 Savage Hi-Power, AKA 5.6×52mmR.
Just mailed the last of the parts to Bailey last week front sight base, barrel band sling point and last but very important the custom made 9.5x74r chamber reamer along with twenty round of loaded ammo, I should be on the down hill slide on this project. RNB
