My 35 Whelen/Bubba ed' Mauser

A few months ago I had some surgery that required me to spend a few days in bed. I spent most of the time surfing this forum. I learned many things and really appreciate the time professionals and amateurs have spent to add information to this forum as it has been really helpful to me in my current project.

One thing that I learned is that I am a Bubba, I thought that I was an amateur or a hobbiest. But I learned that I was wrong I am actually a bubba. Big Grin

See I like to rework old mauser rifles in my garage = Bubba
I file down the stripper clip ramp on the reciever = Bubba/Satan
I do not install Iron Sights on my barrels = Bubba
I like Fleur De Leis Checkering = Bubba (Cant spell correctly = Double Bubba) Big Grin Wink

All kidding aside; don’t get me wrong I love the British classics as a matter of fact I own a Holland and Holland Royal Shotgun. But I also like the modern style as well. My next rifle will probably be more of the classic but here is my latest project. I always wanted a 35 Whelen so here it is. My wife picked out the wood and my kids helped me sand the stock. So it was a bit of a family project.

It is not perfect and I will do a lot of things different on my next project. But I had a lot of fun building it and I think that it will shoot just fine. I am really happy with how it turned out and I wanted to share it with all of you.

Another thing that I learned is that it is really difficult to take pictures of a rifle! But here they are.....

Shoot man, you got a long way to go to be elevated to bubba, you barely qualify to be his second cousin: bubinga

And the checkering, while not fleur de lis, is very subtle. Big Grin

Brad,

We'll call ya Bubba if that's what ya really want ... but it'd be a disservice to the rest of us real bubbas who just build truck guns.

Your work is WAY beyond that poor level of expertise!

Congratulations on a very nice build indeed.

(As I scamper to hide my poor efforts ... shooting well is OBVIOUSLY just not enough any more!)

Since I am a Bubba I am qualified to define you as a padawan bubba.
35 Whelen is a good bubba cart.

Thanks for the kind words guys! I really appreciate it!

If it helps prove my case that I am a true Bubba. I did weld the bolt handle with an Oxy-Acetylene torch. From what I have read on the internet that makes me a Bubba and the bolt handle is sure to fall off. Big Grin Wink

As for my very subdued checkering. I do have checkering tools and a stack of walnut scraps with some pretty awful looking checkering samples that I have scratched out. I have a lot to learn before I checker a stock. I am looking for someone to checker this stock. I would be very grateful for some recommendations.

Seems like we need a Bubba/bubba/bubbaett forum to cover some of these topics properly.

Maybe Boba Fett was really a Bubba. He liked guns and was a bounty hunter after all. Because he could not speak maybe they messed up his name. Perhaps he is really Bubba Fred.
That gun is kinda Nouveau Bubba Riche. Old school rich Bubbas would have a more Weatherby look to it. It's too refined and stylish. Perhaps make a cut out for a can of Skoal in the stock and your favorite NASCAR driver likeness etched into the metalwork. Skip the checkering and go for grip tape.
It's a fine looking gun in a fine chambering. I hope you did at least a 1 in 12 twist barrel. Well done. The wood is gorgeous and nice ebony end. Looks trim and lively.
Bubinga would make a nice Bubba gun stock.

Brad, assuming you didn't start with a pristine Oberndorf or Brno sporter, I won't refer to you as Bubba. Nice work!

Brad -

Very nice!

Of course, you took me from classifying myself as a Bubba, but if that is what you are, I'm just a HACK!

Excellent work, much better than I am capable of, obviously.

You have now gone and elevated the term Bubba way beyond the capabilities of most of us here. I guess we're mere Bubbettes. :-)

Check out Kathy Forster for checkering. She's in Beaverton, OR. Find her at American Custom Gunmakers Guild. She's skilled, affordable, and provides fast service. (She may have her own web site)

I think you now can call yourself a Master Bubba, or BubbaMeister, as they say in Europe.
