Hi Safarikid, Have you had a religious experience? Reborn? As you were ... Seems lots of 577 NE rims have been done on the Ruger No.1, 600 NE is definitely too big. JDJ's 600/577NE wildcat/proprietary by SKS Industries is a big one. I am still waiting for a 20g 3.5" to be completed, and it is truly turning out to be the 20 Gauge from Hell for my Gunsmith. He had to bore out the loading port surface leading into the chamber, skeletonizing or emaciating the action a bit. Now he needs to get the extraction/ejection to work properly ... I am sure Ruger will say I have voided any warranty. It is a little larger than the 577 NE, not as big as the 600 NE diameter, but longer by a half inch. You may go long as you like but don't go fatter than the 577 NE is the best guide.

Hal Roberts was a gunsmith in Colorado years ago. He converted a #3 to 600 NE, iirc.

Reasonably unreasonable... A 577 3". Do a 22" and you will have a fantastic woods rifle. I think Dennis Olsen will literally open up/re thread the action for a little more meat on the threaded barrel. Do a 500 while your at it. I am back from a long Hiatus... or whatever. Take care. smallfry

Without doing some serious alterations due to the rim diameter of the 577NE, I think your best bet is a 458-408 Chey-Tac. Without serious wildcatting I would consider the 460 WBY. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

Why? The recoil of the large nitro express calibers in a single shot is severe. I owned an original Jeffery .600 single shot and it was too uncomfortable to shoot so I sold it. Yes, I could have loaded it down but what's the use in having a .600 loaded to .450 recoil? Might as well have bought a .450 to begin with and saved a lot of money. A friend has a Wilkes .600 double, looks just like my rifle, but was built on a .500 frame. Pleasant to carry, but the recoil is too much at 11 pounds.
