LHeym500 - These are the specs from Holland & Holland for the factory ammo:

  • Bullet weight: 12-bore = 740 grains / 48 gram
  • Bullet diameter: .735" (Fosbery Pattern)
  • Muzzle velocity: *1050 ft./sec. / 320 m/sec.
  • Muzzle energy: *1840 ft./lbs. / 2500 joules
  • Service pressure: 3 ¼ tons " / 850 bar
  • Cartridge case: 12-bore 2 ½" / 65mm

*Note: At 100 yards the very heavy bullet retains over 90% of the velocity and 85% of the energy making the bullet truly deadly on even the largest soft-skinned game.

That bullet is 1-11/16 ounces of lead. It isn't going fast but it just keeps going.

Here is the trajectory. The new gun has a 50 yd leaf and a 100 yd leaf:

And I worked this up to shoot minute of small paper plate because that's a good target:

Nice. I need to get down under and 'avago' at some bulls.

I am partial to the British stuff myself, especially the ones with the old style funky animal engravings. But I like Mac's animals, too. Who wouldn't?

All these guns are really something.

    Thanks guys.

    Nice collection Huvius.

I used to own a Manton & Co. just like your .22HP. Mine was in 6.5x52R (.25-35) caliber and came naked, no case or accessories. It was very light, petite and fun to shoot. I should have kept that one.

Since I acquired a .350 no2 and some 12s and a 10 double rifles, I crave doubles that have mild recoil. The .22 HP Manton gets my heart pumping. I would like to fine one or a .280 or .300, both flanged.
    Keep 'em comin.'

    It is amazing now the finest gunsmiths on the planet would have their kids do the engraving. For then years I have had a love affair with my .600 Wilkes but I still can't figure out what the hell kind of critter is engraved on the action!     Cal;

I have the answer to the identification of the "critter": it is a Tasmanian Tiger, now extinct. Well read and educated in the ancient natural science, those kids of the gunmakers.

This is the 12ga bore double rifle I recently picked up, made by Lou Alessandri. It's outfitted with fully-rifled barrels, tang over comb, express sights, claw mount bases, leather covered recoil pad, great wood, and a full set of loading tools. I'm researching the rifle now...it was supposed to have been made for one of the Jurassic Park movies. Alessandri is known for his ultra-high-end firearm cleaning sets that sold as high as $14,995!!!

Mr. Biebs: Thank you for posting your 12 bore from your prior post to our database. I thank you for your help on the forum. Those cartridges look like artillery pieces. How long are the pipes?
Mr. Subsailor: Have you shot the risingbite yet?
UEG and Ozhunter: I like the older shoe lump Merkels more than the new model without cocking indicators and monobolck system.
Nothing wrong with the new ones; just my opinion. If anyone has a new Merkel, please post it. They are by all accounts weapons to be proud of. Everyone should feel like King Arthur unsheathing Excalibur when they reach for their double. I know I do.

Yeah, too commercial, like the names of Hollis, Boswell, Springer, Greener, and Gibbs. Way too commercial.
You act as though Butch is paying you by the word... You are a disservice to the Searcy brand.

0z -- that picture grab's me '''hopelessly''' homesick for a place 300 k due east of darwin

deep inside a paper bark cathedral, gold rays leaking through, a black ear here a piece of leg there, all mixed up, tree buffalo and me, light sloshing about, rifle in hand

you are killing me man that's not a double rifle

    that double is at work

    not the same

a woman, a woman that works

    very different

    one rare

    the other not so much

Anyway it matters not, because my experience always has been that of---- a loss of snot and enamel on both sides of the 458 Win----
