Gentlemen:
Saturday May 2, 2015 is the first Alaska double rifle shoot at the Birchwood range. As always a collection will be taken to repay Rob the range reservation fee. I will contact local double rifle shooters for items to bring for food and drink. I will bring the grill and propane, paper plates and utensils, ketchup and mustard, etc., as well as a few trashy doubles to shoot.
I will bring a 4-bore, 1 or 2 8-bores, and the ever common .600, .500, .450 no2, .450-400, .350 no2 and a few bpe doubles.
Feel free to email me at <pappas@mtaonline.net> for any questions, an RSVP, etc.
Should be fun.
Remember, any out of staters are welcome to visit us at any time. Mac, and others, have mentioned interest. You are all welcome. You, too, George. Just keep your comments to yourself about the quality of our double rifles.
Cheers,
Cal

Last time I shot my double it must have knocked some fillings out.I have been having sensitive tooth pain and earache since. It is not something I am looking forward to doing any time soon. Also after going through one of the coldest Quebec winters ever, I will not step foot in Alaska. If you were to hold it in a place like las vegas I would seriously consider going just for the BBQ-or any other place where it is nice and warm and there is something to do in case things get boring.Alaska is only for people who are forced to live there(almost like Quebec-which is worst)).

George: Sorry Alaska is boring for you and also the quality of the doubles here would disappoint you, no doubt. We are having our warmest winter and spring ever on record. You may knock Alaksa but look at the entire picture: super hunting and fishing, no sales tax, no income tax, zero gun laws, remote Alaska has no property tax or building or other permits required, and a yearly check to share in the oil money. I know these advantages can't compare with socialist Canada, nor can our Hollands, Purdeys, Westleys, etc, can compare with your fine bespoke double. But, the good news is we are trying to win your approval. And, you're still invited!
For the rest of you, we may have a shoot at a public range 5 miles from my home in July. If anyone is interested, email or PM me and we can make a plan.
Cheers,
Cal

I believe that Cal has written 3 books on double rifles and has probably handled more doubles than you have ever seen, shootaway. I also have to believe that in all his experience with doubles he has probably seen the insides of more doubles than he can remember. I don't understand your need to add something negative to someone else's post. I wish I could get to Alaska for the double shoot, but can't. So to take a page from your book, and add something negative, why don't YOU, instead of trying to bring down other posters use your time to practice your shooting so your groups don't look like someone patterning a shotgun, learn to handle recoil or give up big bores, and learn the difference between a male and female Cape Buffalo. And finally, PLEASE STOP WHINING all the time.

I woke up last night with a terrible tooth pain.I took out my powerful flashlight and shone it in my mouth to see if I could find the source of the ache.I found a chunk of my lower rear right molar broken off.I should stop whining when I get that fixed.

I do not own a sidelock but that would make owning one interesting. It could be difficult keeping the firing mech. on a box lock lubricated and rust free especially since I do like my screws really tightened and locked with loctite.I can not easily unscrew it.Perhaps a sidelock would be better suited for this purpose.

And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.

Birchwwod range is east of Eagle River, about 20 miles from Anchorage. Google the shooting range there and it should give directions. Hope to see you there.

Just got word we can't rent the range so some will arrive early and take up space. The range will charge non members 20$ for the day's shooting. That kind of sucks but we can live with it.

I hope Rob and a couple of others can get there early and take up space until the range opens to the public at 10am. I don't know why they refused to rent to us this year.
I will be in Kansas hunting turkey next week and upon my return I will email the regulars what food items to bring and we will have a good day at it.

Thanks for asking Cal. I'll be back May 17th, so I will miss this one. O-Bob, Joyce is sad she won't get to rock & roll with your full auto toys.

Let's try and have another shoot later in the summer.

Jim, I'll try to make it later in the summer when you guys are here. I'd love to hear the details of your trip. You and Joyce are welcome to play with my toys anytime you like.

I plan to bring 8, 10, 30-06, and 25-20 doubles, along with my 4 single, howdah, 45 ACP Enfield/Delisle, Thompson, 510, and, just for Mike, one of those ugly black guns that quietly spits out 30 pieces of brass/sec. I started loading 4-bore ammo tonight!

We may have 4 out of staters coming up and I hope more.

I'll bring two 8s and a 4 and a 12 for the bore rifles, a .577 and two .500 bpe doubles, and for the nitro lovers a .350, .450-400, .450 no2, .500, and a .600.

Well then, I'll bring the Daisy, 25-20, 30-06, 318, plus the others and we'll have quite the range from .177 to 1.005". Smiler That will be quite a line up.

Here are a few post from our previous shoots. Everyone with any interest in doubles invited, VERY informal, good food and good company, and lots of fun shooting each other's stuff.

You all have great time, looks to be great weather. Cal, I've enjoyed your book immensely. Going to miss the shoot - going to enjoy some San Miguel's out of CONUS unfortunately/fortunately. Between missing the Great Alaska Aviation Gathering (what a crappy name!) at PANC and the double shoot, I'm bummed.
I'll console myself with some Kavalan Soloist perhaps. ;-)

I am trying to finish up two aircraft annuals, there is the Alaska Airman's show, an Anchorage gun show and Cal's double rifle shoot all in the same day! Looks like I am going to be a busy man. I already have my 450/400 Zoli double and a few boxes of ammo ready and will bring my 1907 404 Jeffery if I can find some ammo for it.

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

Looks like we are going to have a good turnout.
To let out a secret, I just bought a 1920s Cogswell and Harrison takedown .375 H&H bolt gun, cased in oak and leather. I will try to remember to lug it along.
