This is the beginning of the next project, a 16 Bore(.669″) Purdey style caplock side by side muzzleloader. This project is going to be very similar to the 10 Bore double rifles that I built last year so I’m not going to be doing a lot of video with this build. I will be posting some update pictures as I go along though just to let everybody(especially my customer) know how things are progressing. If you'd like to see the videos of the 10 Bore builds you can visit my blog at stolzergunsmithing.wordpress.com I Started by turning the barrel blanks down to a straight taper, then breeching them and then clamping them to a steel plate for soldering together. I use silver brazing rod and flux to join the barrels for the first couple inches at the breech end. Both sides of the valleys were fluxed and soldered. A shot of the muzzles… .669″ bore. I don’t run the barrels exactly parallel with the bore line, I actually like them to convert slightly, so that later on when it comes time to regulate them I can drive the wedge in and spread the barrels as needed. After some careful measuring I determined that parallel would leave a .215″ gap so I went .200″. The next step is to make the top and bottom ribs, to machine the radius in the bottom rib I soldered it onto a piece of 1/2″ x 1″ bar stock so it would be easy to clamp in the mill and easy to clamp in my vise to clean up and fit the ramrod pipes to it. As you can see it makes it very easy to machine this way. That's it for this update, I’m actually a little farther along but those pictures will have to wait for the next update. Colin

Go Colin Go! The 16bore is the true period sporting caliber. I know you hear me on that. Is that the blue flux from GasFlux company? Can't wait to see how it turns out. :-) Cheers Tinker _________________________________ Self appointed Colonel, DRSS

Always enjoy seeing your work. 16 bore is pretty rare and is for über aficionados. With Ed's help to manufacture he made 16 gauge shells that I envisioned formed from swaging down BMG brass and thinning the rim for a super strong case aka 16 GFH that could be a sweet single shot or double. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. Tinker, It's going to turn out almost exactly like the L/H/ maple stocked 10 Bore because it is for the same customer. It will become a numbered set for him with consecutive serial numbers. The only differences will be the barrels will be a lighter taper and a few inches longer on the 16 Bore and it will have drip bars on the breech/locks but everything else will be as identical as I can make it including the engraving and finish. He actually ordered the 16 Bore before the 10 Bore, as you might remember one of my original customers on the 10 bores backed out of the deal and I ended up selling it mid project. So this on e and the 10 bore will end up being a set for the same customer, by happy circumstance. As for the flux I honestly don't know anymore what exact brand it is, I've had it since around 2000, it comes as a powder and then you mix it with water. A mouse chewed through the original box years ago and I had to transfer it to a glass jar. I know this much it kills mice pretty much on ingestion, cause I remember the mouse being dead at the corner of the box. Boom Stick, Tinker, The 16 Bore to me was the ideal plains game rifle of it's day...light to carry, plenty of power for plains game, and dimensions/ballistically near perfect in my opinion. A perfect ounce of round ball when cast in pure lead shot at velocities that are hard on game and easy on the shooter. Of course there are a lot of calibers that out perform it now days but for the era when SxS muzzleloaders were king the 16 Bore had it all in a nice package for plains game. If I could go back in time and Safari in the pre-cartridge era my Battery would be a SxS 8 bore Rifle for Dangerous game, a SxS 16 Bore Rifle for plains game and a SxS 12ga shotgun for Fowling. 8 and 16 bore? I can see the 16 gfh being splendid on PG and DG depending on projectile and PSI. The BMG case solves that. You could do a 1oz 16 gauge ball for PG and 2oz slug or solid for DG. Needless to say you have the perfect combination of good taste and skill and that goes a long way. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. What is the target weight? My Mahillon 3-1/2 dram cartridge rifle is sweet and light. I'll have to weigh it to be sure but I think it weighs about 6.5 pounds. Cheers Tinker _________________________________ Self appointed Colonel, DRSS

I meant to update this last weekend but ran out of time to get it done. All the metal work is finished to the point of being ready to inlet into the wood. The ribs and pipes are completely soldered on and mostly cleaned up. Trigger plate, Triggers and Triggerguard all filed and fitted together. The Tang is fitted to the barrels as well. Locks have been modified and fitted and every thing is ready to start inletting. I’ve also polished up the buttplate and made the entry pipe, front sight and rear sling swivel but I didn’t get pictures of them. Enjoy Colin

I didn't do a complete documentation of this build because it is a match for the 10 Bore L/H Maple Double Rifle I built last year. I fully documented that build in detail so I didn't see a lot of reason to repeat all the same steps again. Here are the final pictures. I'm very happy with the way the regulation came out. The pair together. Colin

Lovely, and well-regulated to boot. Colin, does the drop at heel accentuate recoil to some degree, not that there is all that much with a 16 bore? There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author
