My apologies to Nicholosi if it appeared I was being condesending in my post on page 1. I didn't mean it that way at all. Sometimes I need an editor as I'm writing. I have gone back and edited it to read the way it should have the first time. Happy New Year, everyone.

hello every bodyand happy new year.
I am new to this DRSS, I just joined few days ago after I read the posts for the last month and saw that people were iterested in discusing topect of intrest to double rifle owners /lovers if I may say. I read very informetive, interesting topics. Posts that touched on load devolpment, others that sought genuine advice. or others that had great reports of success, etc. Nedless to say I did like what I was reading and I did join. Dlad I did. Last augest I was back in the states on vacation, I visited thse gun library at Cabela, I always check if they have any new double rifles among there guns. you see I always was facinated by double rifles, alwys liked them and wanted to own one, for some reason or another I have not been able to own one up till recently. At the time of my visit they happend to have a couple one of them was a Sabatti 450/400. the minite I Saw the gun it love from the first site, if I may say. I thought it was very beautiful rifle from the way it looked still behind glass. I asked the gentelman if I can take a look at the rifle which he brought out and handed over to me. I held the rifle and shoulder it. Waw it was ded on target, I lowered and shouldered it again. Again right on. I could not belive it I had handled Merkle, chapus, K gun, blasers and many others, non fit me like the Sabatti. Not only that it felt and balanced great, the metal to wood foot was almost perfect wood being a litle proud, you could not see the scews ot line on the sides and bearly you could see it at the bottom, the gun was perfectly on face, the barells centerd the fore arm the stock was a very nice pease of wood lines and gaps were symetrical and the gun was very tite and felt very sold. I have not seen the price tag yet, I turned to my cousin who was with me at the time I handed him the rifle and asked him his openion. He had the very same pleasent experiance. When I saw the price tag I could not belive what I was reading I thought I missed some numbers I did not have have my glasses on me and thought that I was not reading it right. And they did not have the my caliber .470 I told my cousen if they had the 470 I would have bought it right on the spot. I had to leave the USA and get back to my job in few days, I had no time to look around. On my way back to my job I was on the net and located a 470 in one of the stores, I called in struck the deal and the gun was bought before I reached my destination. I never bought any hting that quick in my life. It looked and felt just right. Since then I bought another one in 450-400 and now I am eyeing the 9,3x74.The moral of the story is that to each his own for those who are happy satisfied with their choice for the sabatti great, wish them the best of luck ans success. to them who are happy with their Merkle, K gun, Chapous or their english best wish them the best of luck. But to stomp down my choice and look down on it. That I resent it big time.
Jorge I saw your target I think it is wonderfull that you were able to get it that good IMHO I think that rifle is a keeper enjoy it, and good hunting/shooting.
Sorry for any gramatical/spelling or any other mistakes, I am not edditing , very late need some snoze few hours and again back to work.
God bless every body, good shooting and God's speed.

Malek

Best regards

Many years ago, as a young teen, I started big game hunting in Montana, where I was born and raised, and my father started teaching me all he knew about hunting. We, and everyone we knew, hunted with bolt action rifles in the Rocky Mountains. Later, while in college, for a time in Colorado, I continued to use bolt action rifles, but I started a long term love affair with double guns, sxs double shotguns and rifles, that eventually included o/u double rifles. That love intensified, when I began doing extensive, serious hunting in the thick brush country of the Cascades and Coast mountain ranges of the Pacific Northwest, where one could get two quick shots, generally, in close cover. Now, after over 40 years of hunting, 30+ years of using double rifles, I recently picked up a bolt rifle, and found it simply not comfortable to me any more, since becoming so used to using double rifles for so long. A double rifle is short for length, fits like a glove, is simply an extension of your arm, and, well, it can't be beat by anything else. For long distance shooting, hunting, I prefer a scoped o/u, that I have found far better than a bolt rifle. You need to experience it to appreciate it, and if you have not experienced it, there is no way that anyone can explain the sort of answer you are seeking. Through the years, I have acquired a large collection of double guns/rifles, and even a Weatherby, but now have only a handful of bolt rifles. I do have three Sabatti doubles, a .470, a .500, and a .400 Jeffery, all with varying degrees of custom work done by me. They are good rifles comparable to most of the other modern double rifles on the market.

Nganga,
You could have just posted that you have 3 doubles and posted pictures of them.

Nobody would have been offended and you wouldn't have had to wait for 5 replies to do it anyway.

Have not looked lately...but a few months back...it was fairly easy to find some new and quite a few used Merkels for ~$7000.00 in both .470 NE and .500 NE.

Steve, You peed on the parade of some of the newest members of this forum, just so you could tell everybody "I've got three doubles,"I've got three doubles, "I've got three doubles" and heres a photo of one of "My three doubles"

I hope you don't act this way out at your local shooting range.

This morning on the hunt, we ran into this guy with a mixed breed mongrel dog and some old pump shotgun with the biggest poly choke I've ever seen. We complimented him on his dog, told him where we hadn't hunted and wished him luck. Now after your original post, it's obvious you would have critisized his gun, told him to get a real dog and showed him your Perazzi, and Elhew's Pointer.

As far as to the PM about Fairgame and dogs. I haven't commented on it but it sure did surprise me when I ran my post by you in a PM (knowing you were a friend of his) You said "F***k yes post it and then jumped in when it was posted and accused me of knowingly posting it when fairgame was in the bush for 2-3 more weeks and couldn't defend himself. I laughed about that.

I would have been laughed out of my neighborhood if I shot a Crossman Powermaster, (I carried a Feinwerkbau) and I'm not sure that the Powermaster came in .22 caliber. You might want to check on that.

Hey Guys,

I like both of you as well as Fairgame. I disagreed with Fairgame on Dogs & Leopards. I agreed with what Dog Man had to say in his criticism. Steve is an ole African Hand and gives me good advice. Count him and Andy as friends now. Andrew is a friend of friends and has turned into a good friend to me. Dog Man has showed me that he is a good feller too.

Now...lets hold hands and sing kum bay ya!!!

dog man actually most of us has allready seen steve's guns, as he is kind enough to show them here, as most of us do, when we have something we think will interest the others.
i think steves question is one that a lot of us old hands in the double rifle comunity is asking ourself, steve just dont have the same social inhibiters as i do, so he ask's some of the hard questions, and sometimes they are misunderstood.
hang around for awhile and you will meet a few very special people here.

Dog Man,
I said I had three doubles to add context to my asking why would somebody spend the 5400.00 on a Sabatti, when they could buy a high end used bolt gun for the same money. I am a DR guy as well.

I showed the picture of the DR with a Buffalo simply to show the previous poster who claimed fondling and admiring. To show that it's not a safe queen.

I have three doubles, 35 bolt guns, sixteen semi's, 23 shotguns and two pellet rifles as well. I also have a lovely wife, one child and a dog.

I will not apologize for having nice things, that is polictical correctness gone wild, our current president is doing his best to start class warfare. I started a business twenty years ago by putting a second mortgage on my home and working like a slave for 10 years on slave wages. If having nice shit excludes one from discussion here thats fine. Do you go into Saeeds Safari threads and accuse him of bragging?

I now am enjoying the fruits of my labor, if you don't like pictures of my rifle don't look. there is bound to be more of them.

I would post a photo of my .22 powermaster but that might be seen as obtuse.

Anything else I might be able to clear up?

Cheers,

Steve

Dog Man,

Not sure where you are going with that, bud. I've stayed out of this shitstorm thread until now but Steve is my friend and when you attack him you attack me as well.

I know Steve better than anyone on these forums knows him. I don't know if you are trying to imply that he is some sort of elitist rich guy with a bush jacket and pith helmet and a gunbearer who carries his doubles who looks down on those of lesser means or just what your comments are meant to imply but I can assure you that's not him. Steve's just a regular guy who busts his ass to make a living, drives a pickup truck, and wears jeans and tennis shoes to work who happens to like fine rifles and hunting in Africa. Your characterization is way off base, Steve is one of the most humble and generous guys I have ever met and he would never knowingly insult someone in a manner such as you have implied. As Peter said, perhaps his question on this thread could have been posed more discreetly, Steve is a pretty blunt spoken guy, but it is valid nonetheless and is one that many of us double owners have wondered about.

Cheers,
Andy

Here's my "Powermaster", I was incorrect. It's a Benjamin Franklin .22. As you can see it's been used, it was my constant companion growing up here in Arizona. As you might be able to tell when I received this from my father when I was 8 (41 years ago), He had to carefully cut down the stock to fit my small frame. He was also considerate enough to keep the drop and reattach it when my size dictated it. The blue is gone as is the wood finish. the mechanism is so worn if you pump it the trigger goes but I still have it and always will.

Do you still have your first pellet rifle or BB gun? I still own every gun my father either gave me or left me on his passing. I appreciate fine guns but appreciate where I came from more.

Nganga, I just wanted to sure I havn't offended you (or others) when I threw my $00.06 hilbily in the pot.

I (for one) wasn't offended by your blunt question. I hope I wasn't suppoed to be! Big Grin

I learned from my elder brother a little while back that it is harder that chicken lips to read intention, and/or emotion in a writen statement.

It is possible that our collective sentaments could have been expressed more delicately...

But I would like to think that MOST of "us" here are mature enough to NOT be offended by (I hope) an honestly (if abraisively) expressed opinion.

Lastly I would like to say, nice buff, (beautifull DR too) and very nice "Powermaster", love the history.

Cabela's just seems to focus on the sale, and too often not much on the service after. If I ever have an issue with my Searcy, I can call Butch on the phone and talk about it. If there is an issue, it can be in his shop for a checkup in 48 hours. I think Italy is a little farther than that...

Last week I bought a new 4x4 pickup truck, my first new vehicle in many, many years. Last night a good friend dropped by, looked the truck over, and commented that if I hadn't bought it, and also sold my other car, I could have spent the same money on a slightly used Corvette that he has been ogling each time he drives by. I said "Yeah...so...?"

I then mentioned that if he hadn't made the mistake of winding up in his current position of paying alimony to two psychotic ex-wives, then he could also have bought the 'Vette. He said "Yeah...so...?"

We then went inside and had a beer. The dialogue made me think of this thread. Smiler

Aaaarrrrhhhh Texas, only 2 things come from Texas Steers and Queers !!!

Not to beat a dead horse too long horse...but to put the record straight...that quote was originally aimed a the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. That University is commonly just referred to as Texas in the state of Texas. Their mascot is a longhorn steer holycow...and...they have their share of well the "other" persuasion.

Used in the proper context...I have no problem with it! diggin

They are good rifles comparable to most of the other modern double rifles on the market

Hello there:
I have read few of your posts in various places on the fourms, regarding the nice work you have done to your Sabatties, (personalizing them I guess). That is exactelly what I would like to do to mine. I would like to add a new steal cap to the grip, with Lion head on the 450/400 and a buffalo head on the 470, plus other odds and ends deppending on how does the finish on stocks looks. By the way where can you buy these caps if you know? according to the pictures both of my rifles have very nice wood with beautiful grain that extends all the way lnto the resever. yet to be deturmined. Also custumizing the length of the stock to my size with some good recoil pads. All of that I believe will make the rifle even the more a part of me, also the enjoyment of hunting with these rifles.

Good shooting/hunting and God's speed.

Malek.

Best regards

malek,

When you customize your Sabattis, please post some pictures!

Steel grip caps you can get from NECG (New England Custom Gun), they have both regular and the "trap door" type.

NECG also has alot of recoil pad choices.

Hope this helps.

I still can't figure why anyone would spend more on a DG bolt action other than a Winchester, Ruger or CZ. When speaking of doubles you are in a whole different class. Don't ask me what it is...it just is something about two barrels soldered together. Don't bother comparing.
