I am no expert.

If it was me I would first check the rifle with an expert. Make sure it is on face, hinge pin is fine, bore is ok & that it is correctly regulated.

Does it fit you? How well do you shoot with it at the range?

I would not buy a nice looking DR and find that after 10 shots my cheek is sore and my fingers have taken a pounding. That happened to me shooting Sam's Chapui 470 - just 2 shots!

If the rifle ticks all those boxes, then I would talk to AR members and check actual sale prices (not asking price).

IMHO British doubles are not as strong in price as they were 3 or 4 years ago.

The popularity of the Heym & VC seem to affect the market.

This is just an opinion of someone who does not own a DR!

Opinions and dreams are free! Wink

Good luck to you.

sir: I would offer 20k. It is a great looking double. My wife is fond of the inletted greener side safety. I love the markings on the rib.

I think that price is about 6k below what Champlain (sp) in Oklahoma would price the rifle based on similar rifles I have seen on it. If it is worth it to you; you never pay too much. I hope you and your friend can come to terms.

This assumes the rifle is clean. The picture shows you shooting, so I believe you are confident that it is.

Holy smokes! 20K? I think that much less than half to be the fetching price. IMHO the dreaded Greener safety is a big negative. Just saying...

Mr. Double Don:
I bow to the more knowledgeable. I just repeat what I see and read. But I have never seen a clean English large bore Nitro Express boxlock priced lower than that. Notice I said priced. I have seen 450/400s and priced in the 10k range but most are 15k.

I hope the gentleman gets the best price he can. But yeah I think 15k-20k cash on the barrel head to be the going rate. You can see the greener side safety in the picture. My wife bought a 20 bore greener with that safety. She loves it. (I concede different application than a dangerous game rifle). I do think it interesting from an engineering stand point.

In my very limited and humble opinion I beleive the Greener's were robust and very accurately regulated rifle. I have an 1908 model in .577 and it has been a very fun gun to own and use.

Before setting a price one should know if tight on the face, bore condition, any history with the rifle, working order, case and accessories, brass and dies, and which .475 cartridge it is.

If all the above is positive, a dealer will ask 20+ for the Greener, and a private sale 15-ish, + or - some. Actual selling price will be between the two figures. It also depends how much the buyer wants it and how much the seller wants it gone.

.475 no2 generally is more desirable than the .475 straight 3 1/4.

From my experience as the garbage man.

Right on the money! Double rifles are a bit depressed right now--top quality guns always will be sought after and bring a premium. If it was tight and the everything was square--I think 13K to 16K would be very square deal. I just passed on a really nice German guild gun in a 500/465 at 9k...7-10 years ago it would have brought 15K without blinking a eye.

I agree with 505ED, for what my 2 cents are worth. I owned a Wilkes 475 No2 with the .483 bore. The Jeffrey has a .488 bore and then there is the 475 3 1/4. So, make sure which .475 caliber it is first as Woodleigh makes projectiles for all three and cases are available as well. Wonderful caliber. John Hunter used one regularly.

Juan, the .475 3 1/4 NE is basically a .450 NE necked up to take a 480 grain .483 bullet. Be advised, slug the barrel to be 100% sure on an old rifle like this..

This round is supposedly credited to Cogswell & Harrison about 1905 - 1908..

The cartridge is a bit uncommon, perhaps the most uncommon of the .450+ family, but it is as capable as the rest of the .450 - .476 NE gang..

Kynoch and Wolfang Romey (Germany) makes modern ammo and Bertram and Horneber makes cases.

Woodleigh make round nosed soft and solid 480 grain .483 bullets..both Kynoch and Wolfgang Romey load these bullets.

He must be a Trump supporter who thinks he has something made of Gold! LOL!

I would not pay a cent over $15,000

Remember that the caliber is not very common or popular and you may find it hard to sell.

If you can afford $15k you are better off getting a Heym in 470NE or 450 NE.

Or even a round action VC - they look very sexy.

If this is true, he will have it until he dies. So over priced it is hard to put into words. Unless, of course, it is $30,000 Zim. Then it's fine.
Stay away from this one. Share this thread with the owner to open his eyes. You can find a fine vintage double from the UK for the same money. If you want modern, Heym is fine, VC offers more for the money IMHO.
Cheers.

Sir: I only bring this up because you mentioned it. There is a Heym ph2 with light boarder engraving for sale on this forum. The rifle is posted in the classified section and noticed in this (the double rifle section). I think the poster is Ebrownw2. However, I am not sure of th name.

The seller is selling dies and ammo to the buyer of the rifle dirt cheap. I tried to buy the goodies seperate but he did not take me up on the offer.

Biebes posted to Heym (older phs on gunbrocker) for 12500 a piece. They were a 470 and 500. One had a red dot installed. The only catch was they were left handed, but a 12k you could have Heym restock the one you bought for you and be in for a good price. Think 15k and under. The auction ended with no buyers, but Biebes link takes to the page and you can see the seller's contact info. More reason for the seller to haggle in my opinion.

Good luck. You will find the one. The shopping/dating is half the fun right.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Searcy 450-400 listed in the classifieds. I'd contact Butch Searcy and see what could be arranged with restocking the gun for a southpaw. Buy the gun and have a trusted US client bring the gun to you on a hunt if such things are legal in your country.

I did not bc when I made my post it was not yet posted, and since it was at the top I thought it would be seen. The rifle is 12 k with out warranty or 14k with warranty. It is a grade above field grade and looks great.

He would still have the import issue. I think Mr. Searcy would restock it to left hand at a resonable price. Just type butch searcy doubles into web search function and his
Contact info comes right up or
PM him.
