Good day, gents.
It is with a bit of hesitation I post this here but I am anxious to show you all my new double. Before I write the description and post a few photos I will admit I am lacking the proper documentation to post such a double rifle here on AR: the coveted SSA. The Shootaway Seal of Approval is the most coveted document one can obtain for a vintage double rifle--of far more value than a copy of the factory ledger or provenance of a famous owner--and I admit I don't have one. Some of you may wish not to read further knowing the SSA is not present and I understand that. Without the SSA my rifle is regulated to the dumpster level: that of a muzzle ground Sabatti coupled with the lines of a Blaser. For those of you who wish to see the rifle, do so at your own risk of being ridiculed by the double rifle guru--the famous Shootaway.

The rifle below is a W&C Scott and Son .475 no2 side lock with automatic ejectors. I'm unsure of the date of origin but a former owner in the 1960s stated it was completed in 1936. The barrels are 26 inches, the rifle weighs 11 1/4 pounds, lever forend fastener, one fixed sight for 100 yards and a flip up leaf for 200. The internal parts are polished and gold plated (cocking levers, firing pins, hammers), and the safety is automatic. Pull is 14 1/2 inches. The former owner also stated in the 1960s he bought the rifle as unfired. This I can't confirm but it is nearly 100% condition inside and out.

To sweeten the pot (if that is possible) is the ammunition the rifle came with. We all have seen the old Kynoch red and yellow boxes as well as the soldered tins of 10 and 20 rounds, known as tropical packs. Well, this rifle came with a tropical pack tin of 36 of the Kynoch boxes! The tin has been opened and 24 boxes remain set in two rows of 12 boxes each. The top row of 12 is missing.

Unfortunately, the rifle's case and tools is unaccounted for but I do have a photo of it from the '60s.

Here are a few pics for you all to enjoy. And Shootaway, please have mercy and be kind in your evaluation. I know I am not, nor will I ever be, at your level of double rifle wisdom but I am striving every day to be worthy just to be in your shadow.

Good day, mates.
Cal
PS. Looking to buy some brass, .483" Woodleigh softs, bullet seater die (or die set) and shell holder.

Maybe we have to wait for the really good pictures in Cal's next book, a more general one about the care and feeding of all sorts of double rifles?

Keep those doggies rollin'! tu2

Cal and his new double rifle "Spot."

Why am I reminded of Cal Worthington (car sales) TV commercials in Anchorage, AK and other markets, a couple of decades ago?

Who was that guy? Was he really selling cars in Alaska and Arizona at the same time? California too?

A Legend has passed. CRYBABY

Cal Worthington, the Stetson-sporting California car dealer who became one of the best-known salesmen in America with his unceasing television commercials beckoning drivers to “go see Cal, go see Cal, go see Cal,” died Sept. 8 (2013) at his ranch in Orland, Calif. He was 92.

His attorney, Larry Miles, confirmed the death and said the cause has not yet been determined.

***********************************************
Calvin Coolidge "Cal" Worthington (November 27, 1920 – September 8, 2013) was an American car dealer, best known on the West Coast of the United States, and to a more limited extent elsewhere, from minor appearances and parodies in a number of movies. He was best known for his unique radio and television advertisements for the Worthington Dealership Group. In these advertisements, he was usually joined by "his dog Spot," except that "Spot" was never a dog. Often, Spot was a tiger, a seal, an elephant, a chimpanzee, or a bear. In one ad, "Spot" was a hippopotamus, which Worthington rode in the commercial. On some occasions, "Spot" was a vehicle, such as an airplane that Worthington would be seen standing atop the wings of while airborne. "Spot" was officially retired in the mid-1980s; however he was mentioned occasionally in his later commercials.

According to a profile published in the Sacramento Bee in 1990, Worthington grossed $316.8 million in 1988, making him at the time the largest single owner of a car dealership chain. His advertising agency, named Spot Advertising, had Worthington as its only client and spent $15 million on commercials, the most of any auto dealer at the time. He sold automobiles from 1945 until his death and owned a 24,000-acre (9,700 ha; 38 sq mi) ranch located in Orland, California, north of Sacramento.
