They will give you the pros and cons of each item including faults. Does help to ask the right questions and you could of course fax or email them the questions beforehand which means they can check out what is what instead of waiting on the phone.
In person bidding - do it on the phone yourself.
Export etc They have people who do this if you don't.

Well, Peter the Danish guy from old Rigby used to attend but he is obviously not recommended anymore. Another one was an independent gun maker who now works or contracts for Wesley Richards (I forget his name). I did correspond with him in the past.
Here in NZ we have a local agent who links up with Holts. I am sure Holts themselves could recommend a reliable US link up.
I expect their service & credibility to be among the best. They have the warrant for looking after the guns of the Royal family! When I spoke to the top guy at Holts a few years ago, he offer to show me the Royal collection!
