Gents JJ shipped two of my doubles back today, so it's time to get a couple more to him. I am shipping to JJ a Heym 88B 9.3x74R and a Heym 37B Deluxe 9.3/9.3/20 Both guns have factory QD mounted rail scopes. Problem is the factory open sights are a little bit better than nothing at all. I thought I might have him add the traditional shallow V express rear sight with gold or platinum vertical line sighted in at 100 yards. I've considered additional folding leaf(s). Also considered warthog ivory front bead. I've seen somewhere on AR a flip up peep sight fitted as part of the top lever screw. These are two of my favorite guns. My 57 year old eyes won't be using the open sights on a regular basis, but I want things right on these guns. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. The apperature rear sights work well for aging eyes. If the rifles have grip caps with compartment then perhaps a wat to go would be an apperature sight that mounts on the rear QD base when the scope is removed.. No matter how you mount the apperature, you will want to remove the rear standing blade. It will intolerable interfere with using the apperature, at least that is my experience. I would love to see the end results. Within a decade, maybe half that time, I will need to change out my rear sights for apperatures. JPK Free 500grains

A picatinny rail system like Ruger does here would be good to attach to the quarter rib to use almost any sight system. http://www.gunblast.com/Ruger_FrontierRifle.htm 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

I guess ugly is in the eye of the beholder. Single shallow V back sight and a pop up moon sight is all they ever need, IMO*. . . . * Which is kinda like gospel. ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. JPK, I have no experience with peeps. I had some concern regarding a fold down peep being too fragile. Also had concern about the gap left in the rib from removing the existing rear. I can still kill deer sized game at +-100 yards with open express sights. boom stick, I agree with Peter that the rail would kill any graceful lines. Will, you're spot on with my initial thoughts. Keep it simple. I was just pondering other options before I send them out and get them back and say "I wish I had...." Don Deo Vindice, Don Sons of Confederate Veterans Black Horse Camp #780

If you make the rail removable like the one posted in the article the ugly would only be temporary. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

boom stick on small and medium double's, you can usually get away with a few small cuts in the quater rib and use 11 mm QR rings. keeps the whole thing nice and tidy. some thing like this best peter

A Doctor Optic works great on a double rifle. Heym offers its rib "cut" for one from the factory. I think JJ Perodeau can cut the dovetails into the rib as well. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

This Burris FastFire has done well on my Hollis. I think the Doctor Optic will offer more options. Rusty We Band of Brothers! DRSS, NRA & SCI Life Member "I am rejoiced at my fate. I have Joe Smithson's QD mounts on my Heym PH for my 1.5-5 illuminated Leupold. He made a base for my Trijicon RMR to fit to the rear mount. Mike Merker is converting the factory forend to a splinter, then some load development, and then the real fun starts. Best wishes to all.

Back to the top for Fairgame. He was asking about mounting a DO sight to a double rifle. On the Heym we mount the sight behind the iron sights. You can take off the DO and remount it with out loss of zero. The iron sights do not interefere with using the Doctor Optic, and remain on the rifle when you want to use them... Don, I made a peep sight for my Heym 500 and it works great. I'll post a photo when I get a chance. My eyes are going too and the peep makes a big difference. Sam

Peeps may not look the part on doubles but I'm pretty sure they're more accurate, esp. on the second shot when you can forget to tuck the bead way down in a classic express V. I'd toss the disc though, for DG hunting at least. If the stock fits well enough, the aperture really just assures that you've mounted properly.

Peeps are also so much faster. I use the one above as a ghost ring when hunting.
