I just sent Dirk Schimmel a deposit for my new side lock ejector rifle. I went up to Gillette last weekend and hammered out the details at Dirk's new shop. I like the shop, it's dark and cavernous and full of machining equipment it looks like something right out of Birmingham. Cool

I was set on a .375 Flanged mag but have decided against it for several reasons. The main one being brass and it's lack of availability. So instead I've decided on a 8.5Lb to 9Lb .450/400. with 24" barrels, a select piece of walnut with rose and scroll partial coverage engraving. The gun will have a fixed 75 yard rear with two flip ups and H&H style front with a night pop up.

Having been familiar with Dirks work in the past I can't wait to get this rifle in my hands. He does really gorgeous work.

Dirk can be contacted at Dirk@doublerifles.us.

He is now taking limited orders.

I hope it turns out better than you are hoping for.

I have no idea what it's costing and I am not asking,

but I am sure it would break my bank. If you want a

.375 I think you should do it, even if it means using

45 basic in what ever length for brass. We ought to

be able to get that stuff for ever, and I am sure a

load could be established that would give 2500 FPS or

so within the correct pressure range. Will you scope it?

Congratulations.

I think in the long run you will like and prefer the 450/400 over the 375 Flanged Magnum.

It is a great calibre.
With 300gr bullets it is a fun gun for deer and pigs.

I would have it fited with claw mounts as it is being made.

Even if you do not think you want to scope it now, you might later...

Plus, a scoped 450/400 is a great lion gun, a scope can help with buff on occasion, is handy if you see a good plains game animal at a distance, black bear over bait, and again with 300gr bullets would do for leopard.

Personally I would prefer 26" barrels...

Are there any pictures of his doubles?

I was not planning on scoping it however I might have to take that under consideration.

.450 what is it about 26" barrels that you prefer on a .450/400?

I will request that Dirk takes pictures while the rifle is in process. I'll post them as they come.

Dirk has sold several rifles on this sight over the years but he is just getting started as a truly independent maker. I believe that Jeff Wemmer bought on of his box lock .470's several years ago.

Thanks for the comments guys I should have some pictures to post soon.

Oh I see that Jeff posted while I was writing this. Jeff you decided on the .577? Excellent choice Dirk was trying to talk me into a big one too.

Just my opine here,
Most of the old classic double rifles had 26-28 inch barels. They just make the rifle, look like a rifle, not a shotgun. I have 26" barrels on my 450/400 3 inch.

I don't know of anyone who has 26" barrels that would want shorter barrels! Like I said, just my opine.

26" barrels should help to achieve that magical 2100fps.
Talley bases like Searcy's are a good idea.

What is Dirks background? What is his web page? I don't recall seeing his name in the past.

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! To answer your questions. I post here as h2oboy, so there has been little mention of my name.
