carpetbagger, Think you could succeed in stiring. But remember - what makes sense to one may not may sense to another! I for instant think the 280 makes no sense, figuring I've got the 270 on one side and the 30-06 on the other. But if starting from scratch and didn't own any, the 280 could make sense! Judging for the replies on other threads from the 280 and 280AI owners, there's a lot of happy campers with one. ________ Ray

Ray Sendero---Certainly this is an opinion deal. I put .300 mags and 25-06 on my list---but look at their sales, obviously a lot of folks don't agree with me (no way I can educate everyone).

I have a 7mmRemMag and I completely agree on loading it with 175gr bullets. Like loading the 25-06 with 120s it defeats the purpose. I've never bought a 7mm bullet heavier than a 140gr, nor do I intend to... The one I really don't see the sense in is the 243win loaded with 100gr bullets as a deer killer, will it work? yeah... but a 7mm-08 loaded with 120's makes a whole bunch more sense... While I know they're fine pieces of engineering, I could never warm up to the Browning BAR, the Rem 742 series or most other sporting auto feeders... but I like the AR15/AR10 rifles just fine. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

This thread is basically the inverse of the ever popular "choose X rifles for yourself" thread. Frankly, it's much easier to name the 5-7 calibres that DO make sense to me and say the rest don't. .22LR (obvious...you need one) .308 (range accuracy/sniper) 30-06 (practical hunting for everything from varmints (110 grain bullets) up to Moose/kudu/sable but probably excluding eland even with 220s) 9,3x62 (everything from eland and bears to MAYBE elephant) .416 Rem/Rig or maybe .404 Jeffery (just for fun or for the guy who might sometimes be uncomfortable with the 9,3 on ele) 8 bore (follow ups in thick cover) What I want is a justification from anyone as to why someone ever needs ANYTHING BUT the above given current bullet weight offerings.

tendrams--You ever shoot 110 grainers in a 30-06? A far cry from a varmint round. I bet if you went on a prarie dog shoot with lots of shooting using that you'd be adding a 22 centerfire or some such to your list.

When it comes to shooting prairie dogs....the largest caliber I want is the .243... The .22-250 and .223 are where it's at. Shooting a .30-06 with 110s will last about ten minutes max /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." vapodog--prarie dogs with 30-06 and 110's about 10 mins max---you got that right that was my point. Years ago I loaded some 110's for my 06 and the big surprise was that they were hitting where my 150's hit---recoil and blast couldnt tell much difference at all. Using cast bullets and Unique a guy could shoot it all day though.

So throw the 110 grainers in the .308. or fine....ditch the .416/404 for ele and wholly rely on the 9,3. Might even ditch the .308 if we are really thinning the herd. .22 rimfire .22 centerfire 30-06 9,3 8 bore

The reality is that for every good cartridge in one mans opinion it is probably over rated or worthless in another mans opinion. How sad it would be if we didn't "invent" a new cartridge every few years: Think of the short magnums, the super short magnums, the non magnums and the cartridges that have fallen out of favor only to be"re-discovered" by some gun writer trying to meet a deadline. Were it not for new or improved cartridges, there would be nothing to write about, nothing to BS about and nothing to "wonder why" about. Without new cartridges would the manufactures of guns and ammunition have to slow or reduce factory output, lay off workers and drive the gun writers and the gun rags out of business? After all, if you have a twenty-two, a thirty-thirty and a sixteen gauge, what else could you possibly need? Don't ask me what happened, when I left Viet Nam, we were winning.

I am joining in late here, but personally, I have no use for any cartridge with the words "Short" or "Ultra" in the caliber name. Or any rifle or ammunition manufacturer's name, for that matter.

AC and Whatthe... My first competitive game was with a shotgun...skeet. It got boring really quick; you've got to run 100 to get to the shoot-off to be able to win like trap. I shoot sporting now; nobody shoots a 100 and it's more challenging and fun! I never shot benchrest but I do shoot the Precision/Tactical match now. Glad I skipped the benchrest after this conversation!

Life is way to short to spend much time in this contest. There are 3 or 4 cartridges that would cover all your shooting needs. The other 30 in my safe are just for fun. Heck we really only need about 4 or 5 types of cars the rest make no sense to someone. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I think that any gun you have to buy custom ammo or custom brass is a complete waste. If I can't buy it (or form it from a standard chambering) from a local store, I don't want it. I also think that anything that has only 1 maker and/or 1 supplier of components is stupid. Hornady is notorious for this and has lost a lot of my respect. "We are what we repeatedly do. With a 243, 30 06, and a 416....wouldn't you be outfitted for anything on the planet? Well, maybe a 223, 7 x 57 and a 375.....no wait minute....maybe a 222, 308 and a 458....no wait a minute....

7mm Mag because the holy spirits that make it "fly so flat and far and kill elk with near misses at 2000 yards" don't seem to like me as I have never shot one that is any different than expected printed ballistics. Every time I run into a guy with a 7mm they have to tell me all about how flat it shoots and how dead things become instantly just seeing the rifle. Oh and I forgot, the 7mm kicks WAY worse than my 458,460,577 etc, but the nice guys who own them do not want to shoot my ammo to prove how well they handle the massive recoil of the 7mm. So I bought a custom 7mm Mag, heavy barrel varmit gun that was a hoot. With 140gr noslers in that 15lb gun recoil felt about like my swift, I mean 600 OK and did indeed kill prarie dogs and rock chucks with authority. I wonder why I sold that thing- it was awesome. Maybe I will build another. Matthew

I should add that there is nothing wrong with the 7mm mag. to my way of thinking or Magnaporting for that matter.. It not the fault of the round that it's owner is a incessant braggart..
