I screwed up a bit in the poll as it should have required that you couldn't sell the free gun.....you had to hunt with it!

That aside it was my intent to prove the answer to this thread

But 5% of you actually fooled me and voted Savage anyway.....I truly suspect you smelled the "rat" and just plain beat me out of it.

Anyway the vast majority of folks on this thread were two thumbs up on Savage and it was my contention that if you could have another gun "free" then no on e would pick a Savage.....well I wasn't far from right as 95% chose something else.

It was my intent to prove totally that the only reason people buy Savages was that THEY ARE CHEAP

In retrospect I could have worded the poll much better but think the point may have been made any way.....

So there ya have it.....when folks are paying for their guns a lot of them pick Savage.....when guns are free it seems 5% still pick them.....but c'mon now you 5%.....ya saw this coming didn't ya!!!!!

You should have had your heros and close personal buddies "alf and warrior" help you with the question. Then no one would have understood anything about the question or that you were even looking for answers. clap beer

It did look like there are a lot of folks with $$$HIGH$$$ dreams and desires. Good for them. Always nice for folks to have a "Goal" set which requires a bit of effort to achieve. Makes things worth even more once they get them.

When those $$$HIGH$$$ rags can't hit a barn from the inside, they are so afraid they might get a scratch on them, or "sweating" that a drop of sweat will pit the blue forever, then they can always get the Remingtons and Savages to actually Hunt with. thumb BOOM

Well, I did not participate, but I bought my Savage because it was inexpensive AND very accurate. I am currently selling several of my long guns, but the Savage 110FP in 223 and my Rem 700 HB in 308 are not for sale!

A good thread, Vapo.

Had a Savage I hunted with for years; today they are my only real selection for a "Shooter"/ Varmint Rifle.

I once bought an old savage 112 fv that had been painted with black spray paint. Paid $175 for it. I cleaned it up and added a choate sniper stock and a tasco world class plus II 10 x 40 x 50 target dot scope. It would shoot consecutive one ragged hole groups with 40 gr. v-maxes. I've owned that and and a savage stryker. They are both history. I have about 55 other center fire rifles. None are savage. If accuracy was the only factor by which to judge a fire-arm I would probably own more savages.

I don't care who you are, that's funny. However, despite how I mad I get, I couldn't bring myself to buy a Savage, NEF or CZ. pissers thumbdown clap

I don't understand how people equate inexpensive to cheap?

To each his own, so if you don't want to own a Savage, what part of your being requires you to tear down a product that you feel is not worthy of owning?

I don't own a Winchester or a Cooper or a (insert name here) and don't see a need to berate them for any reason. For those that find a Savage an acceptable gun to own, it should not be any issue with others. I don't see any goverment regulation requireing you to spend "your" hard earned mony on one of these guns, so let it go, you might just live longer not worrying about a petty issue as to, I don't think people should spend "their " hard eraned money on these cheap guns.

I am not sure what your point is vapo... Evan if you added the fact that you couldn’t resell the gun or that all the guns had no monetary value; your poll does not prove that people choose the guns based on quality or any sort of rational. There will always been inexpensive guns and a very large market for them. I am glad people have a broad range of economic choices otherwise we wouldn’t have so many shooters.
Maybe I am not understanding your point?

Regardless of how good Savage rifles may be, given the choice of a Savage or Cooper for "free", there is no contest.

......And somebody put in the "ruger" name. I own two of them. a 77/22Mag and a 77/22Hornet. Both are anomalies to rifles made by this company!! GHD likes these two!! Albeit I don't have a lot in either of them. They were products of trades at the gunshop. The 22Mag is almost as good as the old Savage 65M I owned back in the 70's and the Hornet is "hell on wheels" using the Hornady 30 grain VMAX's over 9.5 grains of H110!!(Y'all find some of them bullets to reload with!!!)((I'd like to get my hands on a couple thousand or so!!))
Bill Ruger was a genius!!! He got rich selling stuff like the mini 14's and ranch rifles.............named appropriatly...............shoot them and you may hit somewhere on the ranch!!
For the most part, I can stomach the Ruger handguns. As a riflemaker, ............I'm GHD, Goodnight!

I bought my Savage .223 because I believed it would be very accurate, had a superb trigger, was inexpensive, and being stainless and in a tupperware stock it would make a good rifle for wet conditions.
Rifle will see duty in my river boat and with some luck will kill a couple of wolves in the future.
I spent $450 on the rifle. I doubt I could of found any rifle to beat its accuracy at three times the price.
And before you laugh, when I go moose hunting via the boat I carry the double rifle for bullwinkle so I aint exactly cheapSmiler

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

I think you have to shoot a rifle chambered in 375 Rooger, or 416 Rooger to get your hunt sponsored by them. .223 Rem won't cut it.

I don't own any Savages but have shot them and considered buying one based on the way those guns shot. The drawing cards of the Savage arms company are price and accuracy. The reliability functioning of the Savage actions have been mediocre as often as not. The cosmetics have also been an less than stellar. Still I can't think of another gun company that has produced as many sub-Moa out of the box rifles in their price range as Savage.

My experience is with the Savage Long Range Precision Varmint Right Bolt, Left Port. These are expensive rifles and all I've seen are MOA plus in the accuracy department. The Savage design allows an amateur enthusiast to change barrels as opposed to requiring a gunsmith like the Remington needs when re-barreling. The factory offers fast-twist barrel options which are fantastic. Precision Shooting Magazine has lots of praise for the Savage.

This whole thread is BS. Are we supposed to be surprised that people given something for free go with the money? Offer a man a Lamborghini or a Camry and a fool takes the Camry. You know which one will actually be a better car. Your poll does not prove anything, since most of could not swing the deal for a H&H without a second mortgage.

Vapo,

Never owned a Savage rifle; and from reading lots of posts by guys who do own them, I get the feeling they buy them for both the accuracy they deliver, and the price. But, I think accuracy is the number one reason.
Outside of the good looking sporter Savage makes, I just can't get wound up over them. I defer to them for their excellent accuracy however. I can't get wound up over Tikka's either, but they too deliver bullets all close together on a piece target paper.

Sorry VD but Savage does offer Sako, Tikka, Kimber accurady at a significantly reduced price. They do sacrifice fit and finish on their rifles.

I have never owned a savage and never will. My reason is because a friend of mine owned on once in 30-06 and on about the 20th round shot thru it the stock cracked right thru the grip. The guns may be cheap but as I see it so are the materials used in them. stir

While a Ruger might not be as accurate as a Savage, I do have to look at the thing when I'm shooting it so I'm perfectly comfortable giving up a few hundredths in group size just to keep me from getting nausious on the bench. JMO of course.

I think the Savage LRPV is a sweet looking rifle. Cool When I un-case it at the range it gets attention. Great chamberings; .204R, .223 fast twist, .22-250 fast twist, and 6mm Norma BR fast twist.

Also, the M12F Class in either 6.5x284 Norma or 6 Norma BR with 1:8 is a great looking rifle. Out-of-the-box accuracy is phenominal thumb

I voted Savage.

There is nothing wrong with owning one of their new "F" class Target rifles. Unless you do not value accuracy.
But that's my opinion. Everyone is entitled to that (no matter how wrong... Wink)

I figured the intent of the thread was that you had to use the rifle we got for free and not sell it.
Otherwise I would have picked the most expensive one, sold it and bought 2 or 3 Savages and kept the rest of the money.

My next rifle I buy will probably be the one I get the best deal on, new or used.
I own over 30 rifles from at least 10 different manufacturers and every one has it's good points, and bad.
(Bushmaster, Winchester, Remington, CZ, Steyr, Marlin, Savage, Ruger, H&R, Springfield, Hi-Point)

If I had to go out and buy a NEW rifle today, it would most likely be a Savage.

I think all the folks here who love the Savage are loving them because of both the cost and the accuracy. I can only speak for the Savage I own, a 17 HMR. It shoots well.

I will attest though that in the few precision rifle matches I have attended this year there are a few guys shooting Savage rifles. I shot a match yesterday and the guy who won was shooting a Savage in .308.

Most practical shooters want accuracy. I for one wouldn't be concerned about looks if the rifle is accurate.

In fact, what a great company Savage must be if it can make a product that out-performs other factory rifles in the accuracy department at a lower cost! Isn't this the name of the game in business?

I wish every company in America produced a product that did what it was supposed to do at a cost that was low!

A guy I know in Southeast got a Savage in 6.5x284 .. He put a 42X Night force scope on it so he wasn,t cheap, and he has made some tiny one hole 5 shot groups with it ........ . He has plenty of Perazzi shotguns and custom rifles ,, Accuracy was his criteria and he got what he wanted ...
